Background of the Study

Intercultural discourse in multilingual forums involves the interaction of diverse linguistic and cultural groups, leading to complex communication patterns. In Nigeria—a country characterized by linguistic diversity and rich cultural heritage—multilingual forums provide a unique setting for examining how speakers negotiate meaning, manage language choice, and adapt to intercultural norms. These forums, which include online discussion groups, conferences, and community meetings, showcase various discourse markers, code-switching practices, and culturally mediated expressions (Okoro, 2023). This study examines intercultural discourse patterns by analyzing transcripts from Nigerian multilingual forums. The research will employ both qualitative discourse analysis and quantitative measures to identify how participants use language to bridge cultural differences, negotiate identities, and foster mutual understanding. Understanding these patterns is essential for developing communication strategies that enhance intercultural dialogue and promote social cohesion in a multilingual society (Adebola, 2024; Olusola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although Nigerian multilingual forums are rich sites of intercultural exchange, there is limited research on the specific discourse patterns that emerge in these settings. Traditional discourse models often fail to capture the dynamic and fluid nature of intercultural communication in Nigeria, leading to an incomplete understanding of how language is used to negotiate cultural identities. This gap hampers efforts to promote effective communication and social integration in a diverse society. A systematic investigation into the discourse patterns of these forums is needed to inform policies and educational initiatives aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue (Okoro, 2023; Adebola, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To analyze discourse patterns in Nigerian multilingual forums.

2. To identify strategies used to negotiate intercultural communication.

3. To propose recommendations for enhancing intercultural discourse.

Research Questions:

1. What are the predominant discourse patterns in Nigerian multilingual forums?

2. How do speakers manage intercultural communication challenges?

3. What strategies can improve intercultural dialogue?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it provides insights into the intercultural discourse patterns in Nigerian multilingual forums, contributing to improved communication strategies and policies that promote social cohesion and intercultural understanding (Okoro, 2023; Olusola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to analyzing discourse in Nigerian multilingual forums using textual analysis and does not extend to face-to-face interactions.

Definitions of Terms:

• Intercultural Discourse: Communication involving participants from different cultural backgrounds.

• Multilingual Forums: Platforms where multiple languages are used for discussion.

• Discourse Patterns: Recurring structures and strategies in communication.
