Background of the Study

Media discourse plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion by framing news content in ways that influence audience perceptions. Nigerian English news broadcasts, widely consumed across the nation, utilize specific linguistic and rhetorical strategies to construct narratives about current events. These strategies include framing, agenda-setting, and the selective use of language that emphasizes certain perspectives over others (Okoro, 2023). The manner in which news is presented can significantly affect public attitudes toward political, social, and economic issues. This study examines how media discourse in Nigerian English news broadcasts impacts public opinion by analyzing linguistic features such as tone, metaphor, and lexical choices. By employing discourse analysis and audience surveys, the research will explore the relationship between media language and public perceptions. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for media literacy, promoting critical engagement among audiences, and guiding ethical journalistic practices. The findings will contribute to theories of media influence and inform policies aimed at fostering transparent and balanced news reporting (Adebola, 2024; Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although media discourse is recognized as influential in shaping public opinion, there is limited empirical research on its specific impact in the Nigerian context. Existing studies often generalize findings from Western media without addressing the unique cultural, political, and linguistic factors that characterize Nigerian English news broadcasts. This gap hinders the development of targeted media literacy programs and policies aimed at promoting balanced news reporting. A comprehensive analysis of media discourse in Nigeria is needed to understand its role in constructing public opinion and to ensure that media practices contribute positively to democratic processes (Okoro, 2023; Adebola, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To analyze linguistic strategies in Nigerian English news broadcasts.

2. To assess their impact on public opinion.

3. To propose media literacy interventions.

Research Questions:

1. What linguistic features characterize Nigerian English news broadcasts?

2. How do these features influence public opinion?

3. What measures can enhance media literacy among Nigerian audiences?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it sheds light on the role of media discourse in shaping public opinion in Nigeria, offering insights that can improve media practices and public understanding. The outcomes will support initiatives for enhanced media literacy and responsible journalism (Okoro, 2023; Balogun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to Nigerian English news broadcasts and does not extend to other media formats or languages.

Definitions of Terms:

• Media Discourse: The language and rhetorical strategies used in news and media communications.

• Public Opinion: Collective attitudes and beliefs of the public.

• News Broadcasts: Televised or radio news programs.
