Background of the Study

Discourse markers are linguistic tools that facilitate the organization of conversation and the maintenance of coherence in communication. In Yoruba online communication, particularly on social media platforms in Lagos, these markers play a crucial role in managing digital interactions. Yoruba speakers often use markers such as “ni gbogbo igba” (always) or “bẹẹni” (indeed) to structure messages, signal transitions, and manage interpersonal dynamics. With the rapid evolution of online discourse, understanding how these markers function in digital contexts is essential for capturing the nuances of contemporary Yoruba communication (Okoro, 2023). This study assesses the use of discourse markers in Yoruba online exchanges by analyzing posts, comments, and chats on popular social media platforms. Using a combination of computational linguistics and qualitative analysis, the research will identify patterns and functions of discourse markers, shedding light on their role in promoting clarity and cohesion. The findings will contribute to models of digital discourse and inform strategies for effective online communication and language preservation in the digital age (Olajide, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although discourse markers are essential for coherent online communication, there is limited research focusing on their specific use in Yoruba online interactions in Lagos. Existing studies on digital discourse often overlook cultural and linguistic nuances, leading to an incomplete understanding of how Yoruba speakers manage conversation in virtual environments. This gap hinders the development of communication strategies and language tools tailored to the unique characteristics of Yoruba online discourse. Without a detailed analysis, efforts to enhance digital literacy and cultural preservation may be less effective (Okoro, 2023; Olajide, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify key discourse markers in Yoruba online communication.

2. To analyze their functions in maintaining discourse coherence.

3. To propose recommendations for enhancing digital communication practices.

Research Questions:

1. What are the most common discourse markers used in Yoruba online exchanges?

2. How do these markers facilitate discourse coherence?

3. How can these insights inform digital communication strategies?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it investigates discourse markers in Yoruba online communication, providing insights that can improve digital literacy and cultural preservation initiatives. The findings will benefit educators, developers, and policymakers by informing strategies to optimize online discourse in Yoruba (Okoro, 2023; Adebola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing discourse markers in Yoruba online communication in Lagos using textual analysis, without extending to offline interactions.

Definitions of Terms:

• Discourse Markers: Words or phrases used to organize and manage conversation.

• Online Communication: Interaction via digital platforms.

• Yoruba: A language spoken in southwestern Nigeria
