Background of the Study

Genre conventions in literature define the structural and stylistic norms that govern text production and interpretation. Nigerian Pidgin literature, characterized by its dynamic and hybrid nature, often adheres to distinct genre conventions that influence discourse structure. These conventions include informal language, humor, and flexible narrative patterns that differ significantly from those in standardized literary forms (Adebisi, 2023). This study explores how genre conventions shape discourse structure in Nigerian Pidgin literature by analyzing a corpus of literary texts produced by contemporary writers. The research employs both qualitative content analysis and computational linguistic methods to identify recurring structural features such as thematic progression, narrative coherence, and rhetorical devices. By investigating how these conventions affect the organization and interpretation of texts, the study aims to enhance our understanding of Pidgin as a legitimate literary medium and inform approaches to teaching and preserving this cultural form (Chukwuma, 2024; Olusola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although genre conventions play a significant role in shaping discourse structure, there is limited research on their specific effects in Nigerian Pidgin literature. Traditional literary analysis often fails to account for the unique characteristics of Pidgin, resulting in an incomplete understanding of its discourse patterns. This gap restricts the development of educational and literary frameworks that accurately reflect the stylistic and structural elements of Nigerian Pidgin texts, potentially undermining efforts to promote and preserve this vibrant literary form (Adebisi, 2023; Chukwuma, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify genre conventions in Nigerian Pidgin literature.

2. To evaluate their influence on discourse structure.

3. To propose guidelines for teaching and preserving Pidgin literary forms.

Research Questions:

1. What genre conventions are prevalent in Nigerian Pidgin literature?

2. How do these conventions influence the discourse structure of texts?

3. How can understanding these conventions improve literary education in Nigerian Pidgin?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it examines the influence of genre conventions on the discourse structure of Nigerian Pidgin literature, providing insights that can enhance literary criticism and educational practices. The findings will support efforts to promote and preserve Nigerian Pidgin as a distinctive literary medium (Adebisi, 2023; Olusola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to analyzing genre conventions in Nigerian Pidgin literature using text analysis, without extending to other language genres.

Definitions of Terms:

• Genre Conventions: Established norms and stylistic features typical of a literary genre.

• Discourse Structure: The organizational framework of a text.

• Nigerian Pidgin Literature: Literary works written in Nigerian Pidgin.
