Background of the Study

Conversational turn-taking is a key aspect of interactive communication, facilitating the smooth exchange of ideas and maintaining engagement in storytelling. In Efik storytelling in Calabar, turn-taking practices are integral to the performance of traditional narratives, where speakers alternate roles as narrators, interlocutors, and audience members. These interactions are governed by culturally specific rules that not only structure the discourse but also reinforce social hierarchies and communal values (Akpan, 2023). Efik storytelling often features overlapping dialogue, call-and-response patterns, and strategic pauses that enhance the dramatic effect and ensure listener involvement. This study appraises the mechanisms of conversational turn-taking in Efik storytelling by analyzing recorded narratives from Calabar. Through a combination of discourse analysis and interactional sociolinguistics, the research will identify the cues, strategies, and timing mechanisms that facilitate turn-taking. The findings are expected to offer insights into how effective turn-taking contributes to narrative coherence and social cohesion, informing both theoretical models of conversation and practical applications in language education and cultural preservation (Etim, 2024; Ibekwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although conversational turn-taking is critical in Efik storytelling, there is limited empirical research on its specific mechanisms in Calabar. Standard conversational models may not adequately capture the cultural nuances and interactive strategies unique to Efik narratives. This gap hampers our understanding of how turn-taking fosters narrative coherence and maintains audience engagement, thereby affecting the transmission of cultural values and storytelling efficacy (Akpan, 2023; Etim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To analyze turn-taking patterns in Efik storytelling.

2. To evaluate the role of turn-taking in maintaining narrative coherence.

3. To propose strategies for improving conversational practices in Efik storytelling.

Research Questions:

1. What are the dominant turn-taking mechanisms in Efik storytelling?

2. How do these mechanisms contribute to narrative coherence?

3. What cultural factors influence turn-taking patterns?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of conversational turn-taking in Efik storytelling, offering insights that can enhance cultural preservation and educational practices in Calabar. The results will inform models of interactive communication and storytelling (Akpan, 2023; Ibekwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to analyzing conversational turn-taking in Efik storytelling in Calabar using recorded narratives and discourse analysis.

Definitions of Terms:

• Conversational Turn-Taking: The orderly exchange of speaking roles in dialogue.

• Efik Storytelling: Traditional narrative performance in the Efik language.

• Discourse Analysis: A method for studying language use in texts and conversations.
