Background of the Study
Thematic progression refers to the way in which topics are introduced, developed, and shifted within a narrative. In Nigerian Pidgin narratives, which are widely used among urban youth in Lagos, thematic progression plays a pivotal role in creating coherent and engaging storytelling. Nigerian Pidgin, with its flexible syntactic structure and rich idiomatic expressions, allows for dynamic shifts in narrative focus that mirror the diverse experiences of urban life (Adebisi, 2023). This study investigates how thematic progression is managed in Nigerian Pidgin narratives, analyzing oral and written texts produced by urban youth. By examining narrative techniques, transitional devices, and structural patterns, the research aims to understand how young storytellers maintain discourse coherence while reflecting cultural and social realities. Insights from this study will not only contribute to theoretical models of narrative discourse but also inform language teaching practices that aim to enhance narrative skills and cultural expression among urban youth in Lagos (Chukwuma, 2024; Olusola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of thematic progression in narrative coherence, there is limited research on how urban youth in Lagos use this device in Nigerian Pidgin narratives. Traditional narrative models may not adequately account for the fluid and dynamic thematic shifts found in Pidgin storytelling. This gap hampers our ability to understand and teach effective narrative construction in culturally relevant contexts, potentially limiting the expressive potential of urban youth in their native linguistic environment (Adebisi, 2023; Chukwuma, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To analyze thematic progression patterns in Nigerian Pidgin narratives.
2. To evaluate the impact of thematic shifts on narrative coherence.
3. To propose strategies for enhancing narrative skills among urban youth.
Research Questions:
1. How is thematic progression structured in Nigerian Pidgin narratives?
2. What role does thematic progression play in maintaining discourse coherence?
3. How can these insights inform narrative education for urban youth?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it sheds light on narrative techniques in Nigerian Pidgin, enhancing our understanding of thematic progression among urban youth. The findings will support curriculum development aimed at improving storytelling skills and cultural expression in Lagos (Adebisi, 2023; Olusola, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing thematic progression in Nigerian Pidgin narratives among urban youth in Lagos using narrative analysis methods.
Definitions of Terms:
• Thematic Progression: The systematic development and shift of topics within a narrative.
• Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language spoken in Nigeria.
• Urban Youth: Young individuals residing in metropolitan areas.
