Background of the Study

Task complexity is a critical factor that influences neural activation during language processing. In Hausa, a language known for its tonal variations and syntactic intricacies, increased task complexity can demand greater cognitive resources, resulting in distinct neural activation patterns. Neuroimaging studies have revealed that complex linguistic tasks engage broader networks, including the prefrontal cortex and temporal regions, compared to simpler tasks (Suleiman, 2023). This study investigates the effect of task complexity on neural activation during Hausa language processing by administering tasks of varying complexity—ranging from basic phoneme discrimination to advanced syntactic comprehension—and recording neural responses using fMRI and ERP. The goal is to delineate how increasing linguistic demands modulate brain activity, thereby providing insights into the neural basis of language processing in Hausa. Understanding these dynamics is essential for developing educational interventions tailored to different levels of linguistic difficulty (Abubakar, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

While task complexity is known to affect neural activation during language processing, its impact on Hausa language comprehension remains underexplored. Current models may not fully capture the increased neural demands imposed by complex Hausa linguistic tasks, thereby limiting our understanding of how cognitive resources are allocated during language processing. This gap hinders the design of effective language instruction methods that accommodate varying task difficulties and may lead to suboptimal learning outcomes (Suleiman, 2023; Abubakar, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To examine neural activation patterns during Hausa language tasks of varying complexity.

2. To identify brain regions sensitive to increased linguistic demands.

3. To propose strategies to optimize language processing under high task complexity.

Research Questions:

1. How does task complexity affect neural activation in Hausa language processing?

2. Which brain regions show increased activation with higher task complexity?

3. How can educational interventions accommodate increased neural demands?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it elucidates the neural effects of task complexity in Hausa language processing, providing insights that can enhance language instruction and cognitive training strategies. The findings will guide educators in designing tasks that optimize cognitive load and improve language learning outcomes (Suleiman, 2023; Abubakar, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining neural activation patterns in Hausa language tasks of varying complexity using neuroimaging and behavioral assessments.

Definitions of Terms:

• Task Complexity: The level of difficulty inherent in a cognitive task.

• Neural Activation Patterns: Brain activity measured during cognitive processing.

• Hausa Language Processing: The comprehension and production of the Hausa language.
