Background of the Study

Pragmatic inference involves drawing on contextual and social cues to interpret implied meanings in conversation. In Yoruba language interactions, speakers often rely on cultural knowledge, tone, and non-verbal signals to convey and interpret pragmatic meaning. Recent neurocognitive research suggests that pragmatic inference engages brain regions associated with theory of mind, such as the medial prefrontal cortex and the temporoparietal junction (Olatunji, 2023). This study examines the neural basis of pragmatic inference in Yoruba conversations by employing neuroimaging techniques like fMRI and ERP. Participants will engage in conversational tasks designed to elicit pragmatic processing, while neural responses are recorded. The research aims to elucidate the cognitive mechanisms that allow Yoruba speakers to integrate linguistic, cultural, and contextual information, thereby facilitating effective communication. The findings are expected to inform both theoretical models of language processing and practical applications in language teaching and social communication interventions (Adeyemi, 2024; Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite advances in understanding pragmatic inference, there is a paucity of research on its neural underpinnings in Yoruba language conversations. Standard models often overlook cultural and contextual factors critical for interpreting pragmatic meaning in Yoruba. This gap limits our understanding of how the brain integrates social and linguistic cues during conversation and hinders the development of targeted language interventions. Addressing these limitations is essential to enhance our knowledge of effective communication and support educational programs that foster pragmatic competence (Olatunji, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify neural regions involved in pragmatic inference during Yoruba conversations.

2. To assess the integration of cultural and contextual cues in neural processing.

3. To propose models for effective communication in Yoruba.

Research Questions:

1. Which brain areas are activated during pragmatic inference in Yoruba conversations?

2. How do cultural cues influence neural processing of pragmatic meaning?

3. What neural mechanisms support effective pragmatic communication?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it uncovers the neural basis of pragmatic inference in Yoruba, enhancing our understanding of social language processing. The findings will contribute to improved communication strategies and language education programs that emphasize cultural context (Olatunji, 2023; Balogun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining neural responses during pragmatic inference in Yoruba conversations among adult speakers using neuroimaging techniques.

Definitions of Terms:

• Pragmatic Inference: The process of deriving implied meanings from context in communication.

• Neural Basis: The brain structures and functions underlying cognitive processes.

• Yoruba Conversations: Interactions in the Yoruba language incorporating cultural and contextual cues.
