Background of the Study

Phonetic discrimination—the ability to perceive and distinguish subtle differences in speech sounds—is fundamental to language acquisition and literacy development. In Yoruba, a language with distinct tonal variations and phonetic nuances, attention plays a critical role in enabling children to accurately decode speech. Research has shown that selective attention enhances phonetic processing by filtering out irrelevant stimuli, thereby improving discrimination accuracy (Olatunji, 2023). In school settings, where ambient noise and competing linguistic inputs are common, the capacity to focus attention becomes even more crucial for effective learning. This study examines how attentional mechanisms influence phonetic discrimination in Yoruba among school children. By employing auditory discrimination tasks and attentional control measures, the research investigates the relationship between attentional capacity and the accuracy of phonetic judgments. The findings are expected to reveal that improved attentional control leads to more precise phonetic discrimination, thereby facilitating better language learning outcomes. These insights will contribute to the development of educational strategies that strengthen attentional skills and support effective literacy instruction in Yoruba (Adebayo, 2024; Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of attention in phonetic discrimination, there is limited research on how attentional capacity affects the perception of Yoruba speech sounds among school children. Current educational practices may not adequately address attentional deficits that hinder phonetic processing, leading to challenges in reading and language acquisition. The lack of empirical data on the interplay between attention and phonetic discrimination in the Yoruba context impedes the development of targeted interventions to enhance auditory processing in children. This gap is particularly problematic in noisy classroom environments where sustaining attention is critical for language learning (Olatunji, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the influence of attention on phonetic discrimination in Yoruba-speaking children.

2. To evaluate the relationship between attentional control and phonetic accuracy.

3. To develop strategies to improve attentional capacity in educational settings.

Research Questions:

1. How does attention affect phonetic discrimination accuracy among Yoruba school children?

2. What attentional factors most influence phonetic processing?

3. How can educational interventions enhance attention and phonetic discrimination?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it explores the role of attention in enhancing phonetic discrimination among Yoruba-speaking school children, informing strategies to improve reading and language skills. The outcomes will guide educators and policymakers in creating classroom environments that foster better attentional control and auditory processing (Olatunji, 2023; Balogun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the effect of attention on phonetic discrimination in Yoruba language among school children, using auditory tasks and attentional assessments, without extending to other linguistic skills.

Definitions of Terms:

• Phonetic Discrimination: The ability to differentiate between distinct speech sounds.

• Selective Attention: The cognitive process of focusing on specific stimuli while ignoring others.

• Yoruba Language: A tonal language spoken predominantly in southwestern Nigeria.
