Background of the Study

Neural synchronization refers to the coordinated activity between different brain regions during cognitive processing. In bilingual Tiv speakers, the management of two language systems necessitates dynamic neural interactions, particularly during language tasks that require switching and integration. Recent neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that bilinguals exhibit enhanced neural synchronization in frontal and parietal cortices, supporting efficient language control and processing (Uche, 2023). Tiv speakers, who often alternate between their indigenous language and a second language such as English, provide a unique model for studying these phenomena. By employing techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), this study investigates the degree of neural synchronization during bilingual tasks, including lexical decision-making and semantic judgment. It examines whether higher synchronization correlates with improved task performance and reduced cognitive interference. The findings are anticipated to reveal neural mechanisms that underlie effective bilingual language processing and offer insights into optimizing language instruction and cognitive training for Tiv speakers (Ogunleye, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Although bilingual language processing has been widely studied, the neural synchronization patterns specific to Tiv speakers remain underexplored. Existing research tends to focus on global measures of brain activation rather than the coordinated interactions between neural networks during bilingual tasks. This gap limits our understanding of how Tiv speakers manage language switching and integration at a neural level, which is crucial for developing targeted educational and cognitive interventions. Inconsistent findings in prior studies further complicate the picture, necessitating a systematic investigation of neural synchronization in this population (Uche, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To quantify neural synchronization during bilingual language tasks in Tiv speakers.

2. To assess the relationship between synchronization and task performance.

3. To inform interventions that enhance bilingual language processing.

Research Questions:

1. What are the patterns of neural synchronization during bilingual tasks among Tiv speakers?

2. How does synchronization correlate with language task accuracy and speed?

3. Can enhanced neural coordination improve bilingual language processing?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it advances our understanding of neural synchronization in bilingual Tiv speakers, revealing critical mechanisms underlying efficient language processing. The insights will contribute to improved bilingual education and cognitive training programs tailored to indigenous language communities (Uche, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This research is limited to examining neural synchronization in Tiv speakers during controlled bilingual tasks using EEG and fMRI, without exploring other cognitive domains.

Definitions of Terms:

• Neural Synchronization: The coordinated firing of neurons across brain regions during cognitive tasks.

• Bilingual Language Tasks: Activities that require processing in two languages.

• Tiv Speakers: Individuals who speak the Tiv language, primarily found in central Nigeria.
