Background of the Study

Memory recall strategies are central to language comprehension and cultural transmission, especially in oral traditions where proverbs play a key role. Yoruba proverbs, known for their metaphorical and succinct expressions, require sophisticated cognitive strategies for proper recall and interpretation. In Abeokuta, where Yoruba cultural heritage is strongly preserved, the processing of proverbs involves both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding (Adeyemi, 2023). Research has demonstrated that effective memory recall relies on the ability to connect abstract expressions with culturally embedded meanings, engaging both semantic memory and associative networks in the brain (Balogun, 2024). This study assesses the memory recall strategies employed by individuals when processing Yoruba proverbs by using recall tasks, verbal fluency tests, and qualitative interviews. The aim is to identify the cognitive mechanisms and mnemonic devices that facilitate the recall of proverbs, shedding light on the interplay between memory, language, and cultural identity. The findings will inform educational practices and cultural preservation initiatives, enhancing the transmission of Yoruba wisdom across generations (Folarin, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although Yoruba proverbs are integral to cultural communication, there is limited research on the memory recall strategies used in processing these expressions. Traditional memory assessments may not capture the culturally specific mnemonic techniques employed by Yoruba speakers in Abeokuta. This gap hinders our understanding of how cultural and linguistic factors interact to enhance memory recall. Consequently, educators and cultural preservationists lack evidence-based strategies to support the transmission of Yoruba proverbs. Addressing this issue is essential for developing interventions that improve memory recall and sustain the rich oral traditions of the Yoruba community (Adeyemi, 2023; Balogun, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To examine the memory recall strategies used by individuals in processing Yoruba proverbs.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of mnemonic devices in enhancing recall.

3. To propose interventions to support cultural transmission of proverbs.

Research Questions:

1. What memory recall strategies do Yoruba speakers use to process proverbs?

2. How effective are these strategies in aiding accurate recall?

3. What interventions can enhance the retention of Yoruba proverbs?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it explores the cognitive strategies underlying the recall of Yoruba proverbs, a vital component of cultural heritage in Abeokuta. The insights will inform educational and cultural preservation efforts by identifying effective mnemonic techniques that support memory recall and the transmission of indigenous wisdom (Adeyemi, 2023; Folarin, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing memory recall strategies for Yoruba proverbs among individuals in Abeokuta using behavioral and qualitative assessments.

Definitions of Terms:

• Memory Recall Strategies: Techniques used to retrieve stored information.

• Yoruba Proverbs: Traditional, concise expressions conveying cultural wisdom.

• Mnemonic Devices: Aids that facilitate the recall of information.
