Background of the Study
Cognitive aging is associated with gradual declines in various cognitive functions, including language retrieval. In Enugu, older Igbo speakers often experience difficulties in recalling words and constructing coherent sentences, which can impact daily communication. Research suggests that aging affects the neural networks involved in language retrieval, resulting in slower processing speeds and reduced lexical access (Okoro, 2023). This study investigates the effect of cognitive aging on language retrieval in Igbo by assessing the performance of older adults using behavioral language tasks and neuroimaging methods. It explores factors such as working memory decline, processing speed, and executive function deficits that may contribute to impaired language retrieval. By understanding these age-related changes, the study aims to identify compensatory strategies that can mitigate the negative effects of cognitive aging on language, thereby improving communication and quality of life among older Igbo speakers (Nwankwo, 2024; Emenike, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite evidence that cognitive aging affects language retrieval, little research has focused on older Igbo speakers in Enugu. Current studies on aging and language often generalize findings from other populations, failing to account for the specific linguistic and cultural factors influencing Igbo. This gap limits our understanding of the mechanisms behind age-related language decline and impedes the development of targeted interventions. As older adults face increased difficulties in retrieving language, there is a pressing need to examine the neural and cognitive changes associated with aging in this community (Okoro, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the effects of cognitive aging on language retrieval in older Igbo speakers.
2. To identify neural and cognitive factors contributing to language decline.
3. To recommend strategies for mitigating language retrieval deficits.
Research Questions:
1. How does cognitive aging affect language retrieval in older Igbo speakers?
2. What neural changes accompany age-related language decline?
3. What interventions can improve language retrieval in older adults?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it examines the impact of cognitive aging on language retrieval in Igbo among older adults, providing valuable insights into the neural and cognitive mechanisms of age-related language decline. The findings will inform intervention strategies aimed at preserving language function and improving the quality of life for older Igbo speakers (Okoro, 2023; Emenike, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating language retrieval in older Igbo speakers in Enugu using neuroimaging and behavioral assessments, without extending to younger populations.
Definitions of Terms:
• Cognitive Aging: The process of decline in cognitive functions due to aging.
• Language Retrieval: The ability to recall and produce words during communication.
• Lexical Access: The process of retrieving words from memory.
