Background of the Study

Literacy profoundly affects neural processing by shaping the brain’s response to syntactic structures. In Ibadan, where Yoruba is a primary medium of communication, literacy levels vary considerably and may influence how syntax is processed. Studies have shown that individuals with higher literacy exhibit more efficient neural responses during language tasks, with enhanced activation in areas associated with syntactic analysis and working memory (Oluwaseun, 2023). This research examines how literacy impacts neural processing of syntax in Yoruba by comparing the brain activation patterns of literate and less-literate individuals using neuroimaging techniques. The study explores whether enhanced literacy facilitates more rapid and accurate syntactic parsing, resulting in improved language comprehension. Factors such as educational background, reading habits, and exposure to formal language instruction are considered as key determinants of neural efficiency. The findings will offer insights into the neurocognitive mechanisms by which literacy shapes language processing and inform educational strategies to improve syntactic comprehension among Yoruba speakers (Adeyemi, 2024; Balogun, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although literacy is known to influence neural processing, its specific impact on syntactic processing in Yoruba speakers remains underexplored. Current research often overlooks the role of literacy in modulating brain activation patterns during language tasks. In Ibadan, discrepancies in literacy levels may lead to significant differences in syntactic processing efficiency. This gap in understanding limits the development of educational programs that target neural improvements in language comprehension. Moreover, the lack of context-specific neuroimaging studies on Yoruba syntax hinders the formulation of evidence-based literacy interventions (Oluwaseun, 2023; Balogun, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To compare neural activation patterns during syntactic processing in literate and less-literate Yoruba speakers.

2. To assess the impact of literacy on syntactic comprehension accuracy.

3. To propose educational interventions to enhance neural efficiency in language processing.

Research Questions:

1. How does literacy influence neural processing of syntax in Yoruba speakers?

2. What differences exist in brain activation between literate and less-literate individuals?

3. How can literacy interventions improve syntactic comprehension?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it investigates the role of literacy in shaping neural processing of syntax in Yoruba, providing critical insights into the neurocognitive benefits of literacy. The results will inform the development of targeted educational interventions to enhance language comprehension and academic performance (Oluwaseun, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing neural processing of syntax in Yoruba among individuals in Ibadan based on literacy levels, using neuroimaging and behavioral assessments.

Definitions of Terms:

• Literacy: The ability to read and write effectively.

• Neural Processing: The brain's mechanisms involved in language comprehension.

• Syntax: The set of rules governing the structure of sentences.
