Background of the Study

Language perception in noisy environments is a complex cognitive process that involves filtering irrelevant auditory stimuli to focus on the target language. For Hausa speakers in Kano, daily communication often occurs in environments with high ambient noise, such as bustling markets and crowded public spaces. Studies have shown that the brain employs specific neural mechanisms to enhance signal processing and suppress background noise, allowing for effective language comprehension under challenging conditions (Suleiman, 2023). This research examines how Hausa speakers adapt to noisy environments and maintain language perception through selective attention and auditory processing strategies. The study employs behavioral tests and auditory evoked potentials to measure the efficiency of these adaptive mechanisms. By analyzing factors such as signal-to-noise ratio, linguistic context, and individual differences in auditory processing, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how noise affects language perception. These insights will contribute to the development of practical applications, including improved communication technologies and educational tools designed to support language comprehension in noisy settings (Abubakar, 2024; Musa, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although effective language perception in noisy environments is critical, there is limited research on how Hausa speakers in Kano adapt to high-noise conditions. Existing studies are often based on laboratory settings and may not reflect real-world communication challenges. This gap in research hinders the development of interventions and technologies that facilitate speech comprehension under adverse auditory conditions. The lack of context-specific data on Hausa speakers’ adaptive strategies means that many individuals may struggle with language perception in daily life, affecting social interaction and learning. Addressing these issues is essential to enhance auditory processing and communication efficiency in noisy environments (Suleiman, 2023; Musa, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate language perception abilities in noisy environments among Hausa speakers.

2. To identify auditory processing strategies that facilitate comprehension under noise.

3. To propose interventions to improve speech perception in challenging auditory conditions.

Research Questions:

1. How do Hausa speakers perceive language in noisy environments?

2. What auditory strategies are most effective in filtering out background noise?

3. What measures can improve language perception in high-noise settings?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it investigates how Hausa speakers manage language perception in noisy environments, contributing to our understanding of auditory processing in real-world settings. The findings will inform the development of communication aids and educational interventions that support effective speech comprehension under adverse conditions (Suleiman, 2023; Abubakar, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing language perception in noisy environments among Hausa speakers in Kano using behavioral and electrophysiological methods.

Definitions of Terms:

• Language Perception: The process of interpreting spoken language.

• Ambient Noise: Background sound present in an environment.

• Selective Attention: The ability to focus on relevant auditory signals while ignoring distractions.
