Background of the Study

Working memory capacity is fundamental to syntactic processing, as it enables the temporary storage and manipulation of linguistic information necessary for understanding complex sentence structures. Among Igbo language learners, effective syntactic processing requires robust working memory to decode the language’s rich morphological and syntactic features. Studies have demonstrated that higher working memory capacity is strongly correlated with improved comprehension and efficient parsing of sentences (Ikechukwu, 2023). Igbo language learners often face challenges due to the variability in dialects and grammatical structures, which demand significant cognitive resources. This investigation employs both behavioral assessments and neuroimaging techniques to examine the relationship between working memory capacity and syntactic processing performance. By evaluating learners’ abilities to handle syntactically complex sentences and comparing these findings with standardized working memory measures, the study aims to elucidate the cognitive mechanisms that underlie language acquisition in Igbo. The insights gained are expected to inform teaching methodologies and intervention programs that can enhance syntactic comprehension by strengthening working memory (Chukwudi, 2024; Nwankwo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Although working memory is recognized as crucial for language processing, its specific role in syntactic comprehension among Igbo language learners is underexplored. Many studies generalize findings from other linguistic contexts without addressing the unique syntactic challenges posed by Igbo. This gap limits our understanding of how working memory deficits might impede the processing of complex sentence structures in Igbo, ultimately affecting language acquisition and academic performance. The absence of targeted research in this area prevents the development of effective instructional strategies that account for individual cognitive differences among learners (Ikechukwu, 2023; Chukwudi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess working memory capacity in Igbo language learners.

2. To evaluate the relationship between working memory and syntactic processing efficiency.

3. To propose instructional strategies to improve syntactic comprehension.

Research Questions:

1. What is the correlation between working memory capacity and syntactic processing in Igbo learners?

2. Which components of working memory most affect syntactic comprehension?

3. How can teaching methods be adapted to support learners with lower working memory capacity?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it examines the crucial relationship between working memory capacity and syntactic processing in Igbo language learners, providing insights to improve instructional strategies and enhance language acquisition outcomes. The research will benefit educators and curriculum developers by highlighting the cognitive factors that underpin successful language learning (Ikechukwu, 2023; Nwankwo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to investigating working memory capacity in relation to syntactic processing in Igbo language learners using cognitive and linguistic assessments.

Definitions of Terms:

• Working Memory Capacity: The ability to temporarily store and manipulate information during cognitive tasks.

• Syntactic Processing: The analysis and comprehension of sentence structure.

• Language Learners: Individuals engaged in acquiring the Igbo language.
