Background of the Study

Semantic processing speed is a key indicator of language comprehension efficiency, reflecting how quickly individuals can retrieve and integrate meaning from linguistic input. Nigerian Pidgin, a dynamic creole language characterized by flexible syntax and diverse vocabulary, provides a unique context to study semantic processing. Reaction time experiments offer an effective methodology to measure the rapidity of semantic retrieval by analyzing response times during lexical decision tasks and semantic priming paradigms (Adebisi, 2023). The variability inherent in Nigerian Pidgin—due to code-switching, context-specific expressions, and idiomatic usage—may influence processing speed differently than in more standardized languages. This study employs reaction time experiments to investigate the efficiency of semantic processing in Nigerian Pidgin speakers. By correlating reaction times with linguistic variables, the research aims to identify specific factors that accelerate or impede semantic processing. The ultimate goal is to develop a nuanced model of semantic processing in Nigerian Pidgin that reflects both its linguistic richness and cognitive demands (Chukwu, 2024; Olusola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the prevalence of Nigerian Pidgin, there is limited research on its semantic processing speed. Traditional reaction time studies have predominantly focused on standardized languages, leaving a gap in understanding how the unique features of Nigerian Pidgin affect semantic retrieval. Factors such as frequent code-switching and variable idiomatic expressions may lead to distinct processing patterns that existing models do not capture. This gap hinders the development of accurate cognitive models for Nigerian Pidgin and limits the application of such findings to educational and communication technologies. A systematic investigation is needed to elucidate the factors influencing semantic processing speed in Nigerian Pidgin (Adebisi, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To measure semantic processing speed in Nigerian Pidgin using reaction time experiments.

2. To identify linguistic factors that influence processing efficiency.

3. To compare processing speed in Nigerian Pidgin with that in standardized languages.

Research Questions:

1. How rapidly do Nigerian Pidgin speakers process semantic information?

2. Which linguistic factors most affect semantic processing speed in Nigerian Pidgin?

3. How does semantic processing in Nigerian Pidgin compare to other languages?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it investigates semantic processing speed in Nigerian Pidgin using reaction time experiments, contributing to a better understanding of cognitive processing in non-standardized languages. The insights gained will inform linguistic theory, language teaching, and technology development by highlighting the unique processing dynamics of Nigerian Pidgin (Adebisi, 2023; Olusola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing semantic processing speed in Nigerian Pidgin using reaction time paradigms, without extending to other cognitive domains.

Definitions of Terms:

• Semantic Processing: The process of interpreting and integrating meaning from language.

• Reaction Time: The duration taken to respond to a linguistic stimulus.

• Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely spoken in Nigeria with flexible linguistic features.
