Background of the Study
Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections, a process that is critical during language rehabilitation. Nigerian indigenous language speakers, who often face unique challenges in recovering language functions due to cultural and linguistic diversity, represent an important population for studying neuroplastic responses. Recent research has shown that targeted language rehabilitation programs can induce significant neural changes, resulting in improved language performance (Okoro, 2023). These changes include increased connectivity and reorganization within language networks, particularly in regions such as the left hemisphere’s frontal and temporal lobes. For speakers of indigenous languages, rehabilitation efforts must consider the specific phonological and syntactic features inherent to their native tongues. This study assesses neuroplasticity in response to language rehabilitation in Nigerian indigenous language speakers by combining behavioral evaluations with neuroimaging techniques. The goal is to quantify neural changes pre- and post-intervention and to determine the effectiveness of culturally tailored rehabilitation programs in promoting language recovery (Adegoke, 2024; Ifeanyi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite advances in language rehabilitation, there is limited research on neuroplasticity among Nigerian indigenous language speakers. Most studies have focused on major world languages, leaving a significant gap in understanding how indigenous languages respond to rehabilitation interventions. The unique linguistic features of Nigerian indigenous languages may require specialized rehabilitation protocols, yet standard approaches do not account for these differences. This lack of targeted research impedes the development of effective, culturally sensitive interventions that can harness neuroplasticity to improve language recovery. Addressing this gap is critical to optimize rehabilitation strategies for indigenous language speakers (Okoro, 2023; Adegoke, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate neural changes in indigenous language speakers following rehabilitation.
2. To measure changes in neural connectivity and activation patterns using neuroimaging.
3. To propose culturally tailored language rehabilitation protocols.
Research Questions:
1. What neuroplastic changes occur in indigenous language speakers post-rehabilitation?
2. How do neural activation patterns shift in response to targeted interventions?
3. What modifications can enhance the effectiveness of language rehabilitation?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it investigates neuroplasticity in Nigerian indigenous language speakers undergoing rehabilitation, providing insights to develop culturally sensitive interventions. The findings will inform clinical practices and contribute to more effective language recovery strategies by highlighting neural changes that support improved language functions (Okoro, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing neuroplasticity in response to language rehabilitation among Nigerian indigenous language speakers using neuroimaging and behavioral assessments.
Definitions of Terms:
• Neuroplasticity: The brain’s capacity to reorganize and form new neural connections.
• Language Rehabilitation: Interventions aimed at restoring language function.
• Indigenous Languages: Native languages spoken by the original inhabitants of a region.
