Background of the Study
Language ideologies—systematic beliefs about language—have shaped Nigerian discourse from the colonial era to the present. During colonial times, European languages were promoted as symbols of modernity and power, while indigenous languages were often devalued (Chukwu, 2023). Over time, however, nationalist movements and cultural revival initiatives have transformed these ideologies, fostering pride in indigenous linguistic heritage (Okafor, 2024). This evolution has influenced educational policies, media practices, and everyday communication. Historical documents, political speeches, and media analyses reveal a dynamic shift from a colonial language ideology to one that embraces linguistic diversity (Adebayo, 2025). Despite this, systematic studies that trace the evolution of language ideologies and their impact on contemporary discourse are limited. This research aims to investigate the evolution of language ideologies in Nigerian discourse, exploring how colonial legacies have been contested and redefined in modern times.

Statement of the Problem
While it is clear that language ideologies have evolved in Nigeria, there is insufficient systematic research documenting this evolution and its effects on modern discourse. Existing studies often focus on isolated periods rather than providing a continuous historical perspective (Chukwu, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how ideological shifts influence language use, education, and policy in contemporary Nigeria (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To trace historical changes in language ideologies from colonial to modern Nigeria.
  2. To examine the impact of these ideologies on discourse practices.
  3. To evaluate the implications for language policy and cultural identity.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key shifts in language ideologies in Nigerian discourse over time?
  2. How have these ideologies influenced contemporary language practices?
  3. What are the implications for language policy in Nigeria?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a comprehensive analysis of language ideology evolution, providing insights into how historical legacies shape modern discourse. The findings will assist policymakers and educators in fostering a more inclusive linguistic environment and preserving cultural identity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the evolution of language ideologies in Nigerian discourse from colonial to modern times, excluding other sociocultural factors.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Language Ideologies: Beliefs about language that shape attitudes and practices.
  2. Discourse: Written or spoken communication.
  3. Colonial Legacy: The lasting impact of colonial policies and attitudes on language and culture.
