Background of the Study
Language attitudes—beliefs and feelings about languages—play a crucial role in language maintenance and shift. In Nigeria, historical attitudes toward indigenous languages have been shaped by colonial education, media representations, and government policies (Adejumo, 2023). Positive attitudes can foster language pride and community cohesion, while negative perceptions may lead to language abandonment. Historical records, surveys, and ethnographic studies reveal that language attitudes have fluctuated over time, influencing both language use and policy (Okoro, 2024). For example, during colonial times, indigenous languages were often devalued in favor of European languages. However, recent movements to reclaim cultural heritage have led to renewed interest and positive attitudes toward local languages (Nwosu, 2025). This study examines how historical language attitudes have affected language maintenance across Nigeria, drawing on archival sources and contemporary surveys to understand the dynamics of language preservation and loss.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of language attitudes in determining language maintenance, systematic studies examining historical shifts in these attitudes in Nigeria are scarce. Existing research often focuses on current attitudes without tracing their historical development (Adejumo, 2023). This lack of diachronic analysis limits our understanding of how past ideologies continue to influence language use and maintenance today (Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document historical language attitudes in Nigeria.
  2. To analyze how these attitudes affect language maintenance.
  3. To assess the evolution of attitudes and their implications for policy.

Research Questions

  1. What have been the major historical attitudes toward indigenous languages in Nigeria?
  2. How do these attitudes affect language maintenance efforts?
  3. What changes in language attitudes have occurred over time?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a diachronic perspective on language attitudes and their impact on language maintenance in Nigeria. Its findings will inform policymakers, educators, and community leaders about strategies to promote positive language attitudes and preserve linguistic diversity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on historical language attitudes in Nigeria and their effect on language maintenance, excluding non-linguistic factors.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Language Attitudes: Beliefs and feelings about languages that influence language behavior.
  2. Language Maintenance: Efforts to sustain a language's use within a community.
  3. Diachronic Analysis: The study of changes in language and attitudes over time.
