Background of the Study
Historical narratives, encompassing oral traditions, folktales, and documented histories, play a critical role in shaping the semantic evolution of a language. In Efik, these narratives are not only vessels of cultural heritage but also active agents in the evolution of meaning and language usage (Obong, 2023). Through repeated storytelling and written accounts, certain lexical items and expressions acquire new semantic nuances over time. This process reflects changing social contexts, cultural interactions, and ideological shifts. Efik narratives have historically been used to convey moral lessons, communal values, and historical events, influencing the semantic fields of words and phrases (Eten, 2024). However, while much is known about the content of these narratives, their precise role in driving semantic evolution remains underexplored. Recent studies suggest that analyzing historical narratives can reveal patterns of semantic shift that inform current language change and usage (Udo, 2025). This study aims to evaluate the impact of historical narratives on the semantic evolution of Efik by examining narrative texts and comparing historical and contemporary meanings.

Statement of the Problem
Although historical narratives are recognized as crucial in semantic evolution, systematic studies examining their specific impact on Efik remain limited (Obong, 2023). Existing research often overlooks how changes in narrative content influence word meanings over time. This gap in the literature hinders a comprehensive understanding of Efik’s semantic evolution, affecting language documentation and revitalization efforts (Eten, 2024). Addressing this deficiency is essential for preserving Efik’s cultural heritage and informing linguistic theory.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze historical Efik narratives for semantic shifts.
  2. To compare historical and contemporary meanings of key lexical items.
  3. To assess the influence of narrative context on semantic evolution.

Research Questions

  1. How have Efik historical narratives contributed to semantic changes?
  2. Which lexical items exhibit significant semantic shifts?
  3. What role does narrative context play in driving these shifts?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it connects cultural storytelling with linguistic evolution, providing insights into how historical narratives shape meaning in Efik. The findings will enhance our understanding of semantic change and support efforts in language documentation and revitalization. By revealing the interplay between narrative tradition and language evolution, the research will benefit linguists, historians, and cultural preservationists.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the analysis of Efik historical narratives and their influence on semantic evolution. It does not extend to other linguistic aspects such as phonology or syntax.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Historical Narratives: Oral and written accounts that document cultural history.
  2. Semantic Evolution: The process by which word meanings change over time.
  3. Efik Language: A language spoken in Cross River State, Nigeria.
