Background of the Study
Efik, spoken predominantly in Calabar, has a rich oral tradition and documented history dating back to early missionary and colonial records. Historical documents such as dictionaries, religious texts, and travel logs provide valuable insights into Efik’s phonological system (Obong, 2023). These records capture aspects of pronunciation, tone, and phonemic distinctions that have evolved over time. As Efik underwent contact with European languages and other indigenous tongues, its phonology experienced shifts that are critical for understanding its current structure (Eten, 2024). Scholars argue that reconstructing Efik phonology through these historical records can reveal patterns of sound change, regional variation, and cultural influence (Udo, 2025). Despite the availability of these records, systematic analyses integrating historical documents with modern phonological theory remain limited. This study aims to appraise the role of historical records in reconstructing Efik phonology by comparing archival materials with contemporary speech data. Through this comparative analysis, the research will highlight both continuities and shifts in Efik phonetics, providing a framework for language preservation and revitalization.

Statement of the Problem
Although historical records on Efik are abundant, their potential to inform phonological reconstruction has not been fully exploited. Most research has focused on lexical and grammatical aspects rather than the phonological system (Obong, 2023). The lack of comprehensive analyses comparing historical and modern phonological data limits our understanding of Efik sound changes over time (Eten, 2024). This deficiency hampers efforts to preserve the authentic pronunciation of Efik and inform language teaching and revitalization programs. Addressing these gaps by systematically analyzing historical records will enable a more accurate reconstruction of Efik phonology, ensuring that critical phonetic nuances are not lost.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze historical records for phonological data on Efik.
  2. To compare historical and contemporary phonological features.
  3. To assess the impact of external linguistic influences on Efik phonology.

Research Questions

  1. What phonological information can be derived from historical Efik records?
  2. How has Efik phonology evolved from historical to modern usage?
  3. What external influences have shaped these phonological changes?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it leverages historical records to reconstruct Efik phonology, contributing to the preservation of linguistic heritage in Calabar. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and cultural preservationists by providing a detailed phonological history, supporting more accurate language teaching, and informing revitalization strategies. By understanding sound changes over time, stakeholders can better preserve Efik’s unique phonetic characteristics.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to analyzing historical records for reconstructing Efik phonology in Calabar and does not extend to other linguistic components.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Phonological Reconstruction: The process of using historical data to infer past sound systems.
  2. Historical Records: Archival documents, texts, and transcriptions that provide linguistic data.
  3. Efik Phonology: The study of the sound system of the Efik language.
