Background of the Study
Computational methods have become increasingly important in phonological analysis, offering tools to systematically analyze speech sounds and patterns. In Yoruba, a tonal language with complex phonological structures, these methods facilitate the detailed examination of intonation, stress, and segmental features. Recent developments in acoustic modeling, machine learning, and digital signal processing have enabled researchers to process large speech corpora and uncover subtle phonetic variations (Ogunleye, 2023). Studies (Adeniyi, 2024) indicate that computational techniques can significantly improve the accuracy of phonological transcriptions and support the development of speech recognition systems. However, Yoruba’s tonal complexity and dialectal variability present challenges that require tailored computational approaches. Emerging research (Balogun, 2025) emphasizes the need for specialized models that integrate linguistic theory with advanced algorithms to capture Yoruba’s phonetic nuances accurately. This study examines the effect of computational methods on phonological analysis in Yoruba language research, assessing their contributions, limitations, and potential for further innovation in documenting and preserving Yoruba phonetics.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the promise of computational methods in phonological analysis, current approaches often struggle to accurately capture the tonal and segmental complexities of Yoruba (Ogunleye, 2023). Inconsistencies in data quality, dialectal variation, and limited annotated corpora result in errors and incomplete phonetic representations (Adeniyi, 2024). These limitations hinder the development of reliable speech recognition systems and linguistic models. Consequently, researchers face difficulties in fully understanding and documenting the phonological features of Yoruba, affecting language technology applications and preservation efforts. Addressing these challenges is essential for improving computational analysis and ensuring that Yoruba’s rich phonetic heritage is accurately recorded and studied.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of computational methods in analyzing Yoruba phonology.
  2. To identify challenges related to tonal complexity and dialectal variation.
  3. To propose improvements for more accurate computational phonological analysis.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are current computational methods in capturing Yoruba phonological features?
  2. What challenges do tonal and dialectal variations pose for computational analysis?
  3. How can computational models be refined to better represent Yoruba phonetics?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it investigates the impact of computational methods on phonological analysis in Yoruba, providing insights that are critical for advancing language technology and linguistic research. Enhanced phonological analysis will support the development of accurate speech recognition systems, improve language teaching tools, and contribute to the preservation of Yoruba’s phonetic heritage. The findings will benefit linguists, technologists, and educators by offering refined methodologies that capture the intricacies of Yoruba phonology, thereby fostering improved digital language resources.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to computational methods for phonological analysis in Yoruba language research. It does not cover other aspects of language processing or languages outside Yoruba.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Phonological Analysis: The study of the sound systems of a language using computational methods.
  2. Computational Methods: Algorithmic and digital techniques used to analyze linguistic data.
  3. Yoruba Language: A major indigenous language spoken predominantly in southwestern Nigeria.
