Background of the Study
Big data analytics has transformed research in numerous fields by enabling the processing of large, diverse datasets to uncover trends and patterns. In the realm of language policy research, big data provides unprecedented insights into language use, evolution, and shift. Nigerian indigenous languages, with their complex sociolinguistic dynamics, offer a rich field for such analysis. By analyzing digital content from social media, news outlets, and online forums, researchers can gauge language vitality, usage patterns, and the effects of government policies. Recent studies (Umar, 2023) have shown that big data analytics can inform language planning by identifying under-resourced languages and areas needing revitalization. However, the diverse and dynamic nature of Nigerian languages poses challenges in data collection and analysis. Studies (Babatunde, 2024) suggest that the integration of advanced analytics, including sentiment analysis and topic modeling, can provide more accurate assessments of language status. Furthermore, big data approaches can help policymakers craft targeted interventions to support indigenous language development (Okeke, 2025). This study explores the impact of big data analytics on language policy research, focusing on how data-driven insights can guide effective language planning and resource allocation.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of big data analytics, language policy research in Nigerian indigenous languages is often limited by data fragmentation and methodological challenges. The vast linguistic diversity and informal nature of digital language use complicate data collection and analysis (Umar, 2023). As a result, policymakers may lack reliable, comprehensive insights into language usage and trends, hindering effective planning and intervention (Babatunde, 2024). Additionally, the absence of standardized metrics for evaluating indigenous language vitality further exacerbates the issue. There is a pressing need to assess how big data analytics can be harnessed to overcome these challenges and provide actionable insights for language policy development.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of big data analytics in gathering insights on Nigerian indigenous languages.
  2. To identify challenges in data collection and analysis for language policy research.
  3. To propose frameworks for integrating big data insights into language policy formulation.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is big data analytics in capturing language usage trends in Nigerian indigenous languages?
  2. What challenges affect the reliability of big data in language policy research?
  3. How can big data methodologies be improved to better inform language policy decisions?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it explores how big data analytics can transform language policy research by providing robust, data-driven insights into Nigerian indigenous languages. The findings will enable policymakers to design more effective language preservation and revitalization strategies. By addressing current challenges in data collection and analysis, the research will contribute to a more informed and strategic approach to language planning, benefiting researchers, government agencies, and indigenous communities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the application of big data analytics to language policy research in Nigerian indigenous languages and does not cover non-digital data sources or languages outside Nigeria.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Big Data Analytics: The process of examining large datasets to uncover patterns and trends.
  2. Language Policy: Governmental or institutional strategies aimed at regulating language use and preservation.
  3. Indigenous Languages: Native languages spoken by the original inhabitants of a region.
