Background of the Study
Digital narrative analysis applies computational techniques to the study of storytelling, enabling the systematic examination of themes, structures, and cultural elements within narratives. Igbo folktales, rich in cultural symbolism and traditional wisdom, are a significant component of Enugu’s cultural heritage. With the digitization of oral literature, digital narrative analysis offers a means to preserve, analyze, and disseminate these folktales. Recent advancements in natural language processing, including topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and discourse parsing, have enabled researchers to extract meaningful patterns from narrative texts (Nwankwo, 2023). These methods help uncover underlying themes, narrative arcs, and cultural references that are often embedded in the language and structure of folktales. However, the informal style and poetic language characteristic of Igbo folktales pose challenges for standard computational models (Chukwu, 2024). Emerging studies (Ibekwe, 2025) suggest that integrating domain-specific lexicons and cultural context into analysis tools can enhance interpretation accuracy. This study appraises digital narrative analysis methods applied to Igbo folktales in Enugu, aiming to evaluate their effectiveness and propose improvements for a more nuanced understanding of traditional narratives.
Statement of the Problem
Digital narrative analysis tools, while promising, often fail to fully capture the cultural richness and nuanced storytelling found in Igbo folktales (Nwankwo, 2023). Standard models struggle with idiomatic expressions, symbolic language, and non-linear narrative structures, resulting in incomplete or superficial interpretations (Chukwu, 2024). This gap hinders the preservation and deeper academic understanding of Igbo oral traditions. There is a need for specialized computational methods that incorporate cultural and linguistic context to accurately analyze digital narratives and reflect the true essence of Igbo folktales.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it bridges computational analysis with cultural preservation by evaluating digital narrative analysis of Igbo folktales. By identifying methodological gaps and proposing culturally informed improvements, the research will enhance the understanding and preservation of Igbo oral traditions. The outcomes will benefit scholars in digital humanities, linguists, and cultural preservationists, contributing to a more nuanced analysis of traditional narratives and ensuring that Igbo folktales are accurately represented in digital archives.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses exclusively on digital narrative analysis for Igbo folktales in Enugu and does not extend to other narrative forms or languages.
