Background of the study
The Efik language in Calabar is deeply intertwined with cultural identity, and its semantics are reflective of indigenous beliefs, rituals, and social practices. This study assesses how cultural factors—such as mythology, traditional ceremonies, and communal values—influence semantic structures in Efik. Fieldwork in Calabar reveals that many Efik words carry culturally specific connotations that are best understood within the context of local traditions (Idung, 2023). Cultural narratives, folktales, and ceremonial songs contribute to the rich semantic tapestry of Efik, ensuring that even everyday vocabulary is imbued with historical and emotional significance. The research examines recorded oral performances, interviews with cultural custodians, and textual analysis of traditional literature to map the interconnections between cultural practices and semantic expression. This study seeks to reveal how cultural transmission through language not only preserves heritage but also fosters semantic innovation, enabling the language to adapt while retaining core cultural values (Effiong, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although culture is widely acknowledged as a key determinant of semantic meaning in Efik, there is limited systematic research on the interplay between cultural practices and language semantics in Calabar. Preliminary findings indicate that rapid social change may be eroding traditional semantic associations, leading to a potential loss of cultural identity. This study aims to address these challenges by exploring the dynamic relationship between culture and semantics.
Objectives of the study

  • To document culturally loaded semantic features in Efik.
  • To analyze the influence of traditional practices on word meaning.
  • To evaluate the impact of social change on cultural semantics.
    Research questions
  • How does culture shape semantic meaning in Efik?
  • What traditional practices are most influential in this process?
  • How are modern influences altering these semantic associations?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of culture in shaping semantic meaning, contributing to language preservation and cultural education. Its findings will assist cultural custodians and educators in maintaining the richness of Efik semantic heritage (Okwu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the Efik language in Calabar and focuses exclusively on the interplay between culture and semantics.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantics: The study of meaning in language.
  • Cultural Practices: Traditional activities and rituals that define a community.
  • Efik Language: A language spoken predominantly in Calabar.
