Background of the Study
Dialect leveling refers to the process by which distinct dialectal features diminish over time, leading to a more uniform language variety. In Hausa—a major language in Northern Nigeria—computational language processing (CLP) has become a tool for analyzing and influencing this phenomenon. Advances in CLP, including natural language processing, machine learning, and big data analytics, have enabled researchers to examine linguistic patterns across diverse dialects. Studies (Sani, 2023) indicate that exposure to standardized digital content, coupled with automated language processing, may contribute to dialect leveling as speakers adapt to more homogenized linguistic models. Furthermore, the integration of speech recognition and text analysis systems into educational and media platforms promotes consistency in language use. However, this trend raises concerns about the loss of regional linguistic diversity. Recent research (Bello, 2024) underscores the importance of balancing technological efficiency with the preservation of dialectal richness. As computational tools become increasingly influential in language processing, it is imperative to assess their impact on dialect leveling in Hausa and explore strategies to maintain regional identity while harnessing digital innovation (Abubakar, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although computational language processing has improved language standardization, its impact on dialect leveling in Hausa may lead to the erosion of valuable regional dialects. Current CLP systems, designed to recognize and process language uniformly, sometimes overlook subtle dialectal differences, contributing to a loss of local linguistic identity (Sani, 2023; Bello, 2024). This issue is exacerbated by the widespread use of standardized digital media in education and broadcasting, which reinforces a homogenized language model. The challenge is to develop computational tools that respect dialectal variations while promoting effective communication. A systematic investigation is required to evaluate how CLP influences dialect leveling and to propose measures that can preserve the linguistic diversity inherent in Hausa.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it investigates the unintended effects of computational language processing on dialect diversity in Hausa. By exploring how CLP contributes to dialect leveling, the research will provide insights into preserving regional linguistic identities while leveraging digital technology. The findings will inform the development of more sensitive language processing tools, benefiting linguists, educators, and cultural preservation advocates. Ultimately, the study aims to support a balanced approach to language standardization that honors both efficiency and diversity.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of computational language processing on dialect leveling in Hausa. It does not cover other languages or the broader sociolinguistic dynamics outside digital media.
