Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a dynamic arena for language evolution, particularly in multilingual societies such as Nigeria. Nigerian English, influenced by indigenous languages and contemporary cultural trends, is widely used on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Social media analytics employ computational methods to extract and analyze large volumes of user-generated content, revealing insights into vocabulary changes, emerging slang, and shifting discourse patterns. Recent studies (Adebayo, 2023) have demonstrated that algorithms such as topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and network analysis can effectively track language trends over time. These techniques help researchers understand how digital communication shapes linguistic evolution and reflects social identity. Moreover, social media analytics offer real-time data, enabling timely assessments of language shifts in response to political, economic, and cultural events (Ibrahim, 2024). However, the informal nature of online language, with its frequent code-switching and non-standard grammar, poses challenges for automated analysis. The integration of advanced neural networks and big data approaches is gradually addressing these issues (Olayinka, 2025). This study examines how social media analytics can be harnessed to understand language trends in Nigerian English, providing insights that can inform language policy, education, and digital communication strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of social media analytics, current approaches to analyzing Nigerian English often struggle with the language’s informal and evolving nature. Automated tools may misinterpret colloquial expressions, slang, and code-switching, leading to inaccuracies in trend detection (Adebayo, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, the vast diversity of online content complicates the extraction of coherent language trends. These issues hinder the development of reliable models for understanding how Nigerian English is transforming in digital spaces. Addressing these limitations is crucial for accurately capturing linguistic changes and informing policies that support language development in a rapidly digitalizing society.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it explores the impact of social media analytics on understanding the evolution of Nigerian English. By identifying and addressing challenges in processing informal online language, the research will enhance digital linguistic analysis and provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and digital content creators. The findings will contribute to more effective language monitoring tools, supporting initiatives to preserve linguistic diversity and adapt language policies to contemporary communication practices.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing language trends in Nigerian English through social media analytics. It does not extend to other language varieties or offline communication channels.
