Background of the study
Metaphor is a central element of poetic language, enabling the expression of complex ideas through imaginative comparisons. In Igbo poetry, especially as practiced in Onitsha, metaphorical language is intricately woven into the fabric of poetic expression, carrying deep semantic and cultural significance. This study examines the use of metaphors in Igbo poetry, analyzing how they contribute to the semantic richness and aesthetic impact of poems. Poets in Onitsha often draw on indigenous imagery, cultural symbols, and historical narratives to create metaphors that resonate with audiences. Through qualitative analysis of a corpus of poems and interviews with poets, the research explores the source domains of these metaphors, the cognitive processes behind metaphor creation, and their role in conveying abstract concepts such as love, conflict, and identity (Chinwe, 2023). The study also considers how modern influences and bilingualism may be reshaping traditional metaphorical patterns, leading to innovative expressions that bridge contemporary and traditional values (Ibekwe, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of metaphor in Igbo poetry, there is limited systematic research on how metaphors shape semantic meaning in this genre. Preliminary observations suggest that shifts in cultural context and language contact may be altering traditional metaphorical expressions, potentially affecting the depth and clarity of poetic messages. This study aims to address these gaps by examining the semantic impact of metaphorical language in Igbo poetry in Onitsha.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining metaphorical language in Igbo poetry in Onitsha. It does not extend to other poetic forms or regions.
