Background of the Study
Speech synthesis technology, which converts text into human-like speech, has become increasingly important in enhancing communication in urban settings. In Nigeria, Nigerian English has developed distinct features influenced by local cultures and linguistic practices. The implementation of speech synthesis systems in urban communication platforms such as customer service bots, public announcements, and educational tools is expanding rapidly. Recent technological advancements have led to more natural and intelligible synthetic voices; however, Nigerian English, with its unique phonetic and prosodic characteristics, poses challenges to these systems (Johnson, 2023). Researchers have noted that integrating local linguistic data into speech synthesis models can significantly improve output quality (Smith, 2024). This study evaluates the current state of speech synthesis technology for Nigerian English, examining its performance in urban communication settings and identifying opportunities for further refinement to better serve a diverse population.
Statement of the Problem
Current speech synthesis systems often struggle to accurately reproduce the distinctive features of Nigerian English, leading to synthetic speech that may sound unnatural or ambiguous (Johnson, 2023; Smith, 2024). The lack of localized phonetic training data and contextual adaptability affects the effectiveness of these systems in urban communication, where clear and accurate speech is crucial. This gap undermines the utility of speech synthesis in enhancing accessibility and user experience, necessitating a focused evaluation to identify and address the limitations of current technologies.
