Background of the Study
Corpus linguistics involves the systematic study of language through large collections of texts, offering valuable data for developing computational tools. In Maiduguri, where Hausa is widely spoken, corpus-based approaches can significantly enhance natural language processing (NLP) applications. By compiling extensive corpora of Hausa texts from various domains, researchers can train computational models to perform tasks such as text classification, machine translation, and sentiment analysis with improved accuracy (Yakubu, 2023). Recent studies have demonstrated that the use of well-curated corpora leads to more robust language models capable of handling the linguistic complexities of Hausa, including its rich morphology and diverse syntactic patterns (Musa, 2024). The integration of corpus linguistics in tool development is essential for creating reliable digital applications that support language use in educational, administrative, and cultural contexts. This study examines how corpus-based methodologies contribute to the development and refinement of computational tools for Hausa in Maiduguri.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of corpus linguistics, the development of computational tools for Hausa remains limited by the scarcity of high-quality, representative corpora. In Maiduguri, existing corpora often fail to capture the full range of linguistic variation, hindering the performance of NLP applications (Yakubu, 2023; Musa, 2024). This limitation affects the accuracy and reliability of digital tools intended for Hausa language processing. There is an urgent need to evaluate corpus construction methods and their impact on tool development to ensure that computational applications meet the linguistic demands of Hausa users.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it bridges corpus linguistics and computational tool development for Hausa. By analyzing the quality of Hausa corpora and their impact on NLP applications, the research provides insights that can enhance digital language resources, supporting education, governance, and cultural preservation in Maiduguri.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the role of corpus linguistics in developing computational tools for the Hausa language in Maiduguri. It does not extend to other linguistic methodologies or regions.
