Background of the study
Honorifics in the Hausa language function as markers of respect, social hierarchy, and cultural identity. Among community leaders in Kano, the use of honorifics is integral to formal discourse and social interaction. This study evaluates the semantics of these honorific expressions, exploring how they convey nuanced respect and authority. Traditional honorifics are embedded with cultural symbolism and are used to signal politeness, deferential address, and social status. Interviews with community leaders and analyses of public speeches reveal that honorifics serve not only as linguistic tools but also as indicators of cultural continuity and social cohesion (Abdullahi, 2023). The study examines both classical and contemporary usage, investigating how modern influences such as urbanization and education are affecting the semantic integrity of honorifics. By analyzing discourse data from official ceremonies and community meetings, the research aims to map the semantic networks that underpin honorific usage and to highlight potential shifts in their meaning over time (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite their cultural significance, there is a lack of systematic research on the semantics of honorifics in Hausa, particularly among community leaders in Kano. Preliminary findings indicate that evolving social dynamics may be diluting traditional meanings, leading to inconsistencies in respect and communication. This study seeks to address these issues by examining the semantic properties of honorifics in modern Hausa discourse.
