Background of the study
Cross-cultural communication often requires speakers to negotiate meaning to bridge linguistic and cultural differences. In Kaduna, interactions between Hausa and English speakers exemplify such negotiation processes. This study examines how interlocutors use various linguistic strategies—such as code-switching, paraphrasing, and contextualization—to resolve ambiguities and achieve mutual understanding (Suleiman, 2023). Field observations, recorded dialogues, and interviews reveal that meaning negotiation is a dynamic process influenced by factors such as social status, speaker familiarity, and cultural norms. Participants frequently rely on shared cultural knowledge and situational cues to clarify ambiguous terms and expressions. The study situates its analysis within the framework of pragmatics and intercultural communication, exploring how effective negotiation strategies can mitigate misunderstandings and foster more inclusive dialogue. It also considers the impact of globalization and digital communication on cross-cultural exchanges in Kaduna, highlighting both challenges and innovative linguistic adaptations (Bello, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although meaning negotiation is critical in cross-cultural communication, there is a paucity of research on its mechanisms among Hausa and English speakers in Kaduna. Preliminary findings suggest that inadequate negotiation may lead to persistent miscommunications, affecting social and economic interactions. This study seeks to document and analyze these processes to enhance understanding and improve communicative practices.

Objectives of the study

  • To identify strategies used for meaning negotiation in cross-cultural interactions.
  • To analyze the effectiveness of these strategies in resolving ambiguity.
  • To propose methods to enhance communication between Hausa and English speakers.

Research questions

  • What linguistic strategies are used to negotiate meaning?
  • How effective are these strategies in different contexts?
  • What factors influence successful meaning negotiation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the mechanisms of cross-cultural meaning negotiation, contributing to improved communication practices in multicultural settings. Its findings will benefit educators, mediators, and policymakers by fostering greater intercultural understanding.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining meaning negotiation between Hausa and English speakers in Kaduna and does not cover other language pairs or regions.

Definitions of terms

  • Meaning Negotiation: The process by which speakers clarify and align their interpretations.
  • Cross-cultural Communication: Interaction between individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Code-switching: The alternation between two languages within a conversation.
