Background of the study
Cross-cultural communication often requires speakers to negotiate meaning to bridge linguistic and cultural differences. In Kaduna, interactions between Hausa and English speakers exemplify such negotiation processes. This study examines how interlocutors use various linguistic strategies—such as code-switching, paraphrasing, and contextualization—to resolve ambiguities and achieve mutual understanding (Suleiman, 2023). Field observations, recorded dialogues, and interviews reveal that meaning negotiation is a dynamic process influenced by factors such as social status, speaker familiarity, and cultural norms. Participants frequently rely on shared cultural knowledge and situational cues to clarify ambiguous terms and expressions. The study situates its analysis within the framework of pragmatics and intercultural communication, exploring how effective negotiation strategies can mitigate misunderstandings and foster more inclusive dialogue. It also considers the impact of globalization and digital communication on cross-cultural exchanges in Kaduna, highlighting both challenges and innovative linguistic adaptations (Bello, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although meaning negotiation is critical in cross-cultural communication, there is a paucity of research on its mechanisms among Hausa and English speakers in Kaduna. Preliminary findings suggest that inadequate negotiation may lead to persistent miscommunications, affecting social and economic interactions. This study seeks to document and analyze these processes to enhance understanding and improve communicative practices.
