Background of the study
Metaphor usage is a powerful rhetorical device that enriches language and facilitates abstract thinking. In Nigerian English, particularly among professionals in Abuja, metaphors are employed to convey complex ideas, establish identity, and persuade audiences in both academic and corporate settings. This study investigates how professionals use metaphors in everyday discourse and formal presentations, focusing on the interplay between figurative language and professional communication. Observations and interviews suggest that Nigerian professionals adopt culturally resonant metaphors drawn from indigenous experiences as well as global paradigms, resulting in innovative hybrid expressions (Ibekwe, 2023). The study examines corpus data from business meetings, media interviews, and academic presentations to analyze metaphor frequency, source domains, and underlying conceptual mappings. The findings are expected to reveal patterns of metaphor usage that reflect both the dynamic nature of Nigerian English and the impact of cultural influences on professional discourse. This research contributes to the understanding of metaphor theory and its practical applications in business communication and intercultural dialogue (Olu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although metaphors are recognized as vital tools in professional discourse, little systematic research has focused on their usage in Nigerian English among professionals in Abuja. Preliminary evidence indicates that while metaphors enhance communication, they may also lead to misinterpretation when cultural references are misunderstood (Chinwe, 2023). This study seeks to document and analyze metaphor usage, addressing the need for clarity and effectiveness in professional communication.
Objectives of the study

  • To identify common metaphors used by professionals in Abuja.
  • To analyze the source domains and conceptual mappings of these metaphors.
  • To evaluate the impact of metaphor usage on communication clarity.
    Research questions
  • What metaphors are prevalent in Nigerian English among professionals?
  • How do cultural influences shape these metaphors?
  • What are the effects of metaphor usage on audience understanding?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it deepens our understanding of figurative language in professional contexts, offering insights for improving communication strategies and fostering intercultural competence in Nigerian business and academic environments (Eze, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to investigating metaphor usage in Nigerian English among professionals in Abuja. It does not encompass other rhetorical devices or settings.
    Definitions of terms
  • Metaphor: A figure of speech that describes one thing in terms of another.
  • Nigerian English: The localized variety of English used in Nigeria.
  • Conceptual Mapping: The process of relating one conceptual domain to another through metaphor.
