Background of the study
Semantic fields, groups of related words that share a common domain of meaning, are essential for understanding the structure and cultural context of a language. In Benue State, Tiv language offers a rich tapestry of semantic fields that reflect the socio-cultural and environmental realities of the Tiv people. This study examines the organization and boundaries of semantic fields within Tiv, investigating how words related to kinship, nature, and social practices cluster and interact. Ethnographic research and lexical analysis indicate that Tiv semantic fields are shaped by indigenous knowledge and traditional practices, yet are also influenced by external factors such as modernization and language contact (Shomuyiwa, 2023). By mapping these fields, the study seeks to reveal patterns of conceptual organization in Tiv and to understand how these patterns inform both language structure and cultural identity. The findings are expected to contribute to theories of lexical organization and provide practical insights for language teaching and documentation (Agba, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of semantic fields in understanding lexical structure, there is limited systematic research on this phenomenon in the Tiv language. Preliminary observations suggest that semantic fields in Tiv are undergoing reorganization due to modern influences, yet the nature and extent of these changes remain underexplored (Ukpere, 2023). This study aims to fill the gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of semantic fields in Tiv.
Objectives of the study

  • To identify and classify semantic fields in Tiv language.
  • To analyze the factors influencing the organization of these fields.
  • To assess the impact of modernization on traditional semantic groupings.
    Research questions
  • What are the major semantic fields in the Tiv lexicon?
  • How do cultural and environmental factors shape these fields?
  • What changes are occurring in Tiv semantic fields due to modern influences?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it enhances understanding of lexical organization in Tiv and contributes to broader semantic theory. Its findings will support language documentation efforts and inform educational practices in Benue State (Obaseki, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining semantic fields in the Tiv language in Benue State. It does not extend to other aspects of lexical semantics or other regions.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantic Fields: Groups of words related by meaning.
  • Tiv Language: A language spoken by the Tiv people in Benue State.
  • Lexical Organization: The way in which vocabulary is structured in a language.
