Background of the study
Meaning variation refers to the changes and diversity in word interpretations within a language. In Calabar, the Efik language is a vibrant medium of cultural expression that exhibits significant meaning variation. This study appraises how contextual factors such as age, social class, and technological influence contribute to differing interpretations of Efik lexical items. Observations from Calabar suggest that traditional meanings are often reinterpreted in modern settings, leading to a dynamic spectrum of interpretations (Idemudia, 2023). The research draws on historical texts, contemporary media, and interviews with native speakers to capture these shifts. Through comparative analysis, the study aims to chart the evolution of key Efik terms and understand the socio-cultural forces driving these changes. The investigation will provide insights into how meaning variation supports both cultural continuity and innovation, while also highlighting challenges in language teaching and preservation (Udoh, 2024). By situating these changes within broader theories of semantic evolution, the study seeks to contribute to the understanding of how indigenous languages adapt in rapidly changing social contexts.
Statement of the problem
Although meaning variation is inherent in language use, there is limited research on how these variations manifest in Efik within Calabar. Preliminary findings indicate that divergent interpretations may lead to inconsistencies in language use and communication breakdowns among different social groups (Obong, 2023). This study aims to address these gaps by systematically documenting meaning variations and exploring their implications for cultural preservation and effective communication.
