Background of the study
Nigerian Pidgin, a vibrant creole language, continues to evolve rapidly in urban centers due to diverse linguistic influences and social dynamics. This study appraises the role of syntax in this evolution, focusing on how new sentence constructions, clause arrangements, and word order variations emerge in response to urban communication needs. In bustling urban environments, speakers innovate syntactic forms to express contemporary realities, often blending elements from indigenous languages and Standard English (Afolabi, 2023). Observations indicate that these syntactic changes not only reflect the adaptability of Nigerian Pidgin but also contribute to its growing legitimacy as a medium for formal and informal discourse. The research analyzes social media communications, interviews, and broadcast transcripts to trace the evolution of syntactic patterns. It investigates whether these innovations promote clearer communication or introduce ambiguity, and how they signal identity among urban speakers. By situating these developments within a broader framework of language change theories, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the syntactic evolution of Nigerian Pidgin in urban contexts (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite its widespread use, there is limited empirical research on how syntax drives the evolution of Nigerian Pidgin in urban centers. Preliminary data suggest that innovative syntactic constructions may challenge traditional grammatical norms, affecting mutual intelligibility and language standardization (Okafor, 2023). This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the role of syntactic change in the evolution of Nigerian Pidgin.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insight into the dynamic evolution of Nigerian Pidgin through syntactic change. Its findings will benefit linguists, educators, and policymakers by informing language standardization efforts while acknowledging the creative potential of urban communication (Eze, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the analysis of syntactic evolution in Nigerian Pidgin within urban centers. It does not consider historical language changes or non-urban contexts.
