Background of the study
Efik traditional narratives in Calabar are celebrated for their rich linguistic artistry, where syntactic strategies play an essential role in storytelling. This study investigates how traditional storytellers employ various syntactic devices—such as parallelism, subordination, and inversion—to structure narratives and convey layered cultural meanings (Idung, 2023). These strategies not only enhance the rhythm and aesthetic of the narratives but also serve to embed moral lessons and communal values within the discourse. In the context of Calabar’s vibrant oral tradition, the use of distinctive syntactic patterns is crucial for the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage. Recent research underscores that the evolution of Efik narratives is closely linked to their syntactic construction, which adapts to changing cultural contexts while retaining core traditional elements (Effiong, 2024). By analyzing recordings of storytelling sessions and interviewing cultural custodians, the study aims to document the specific syntactic strategies used and assess their impact on narrative effectiveness and cultural continuity (Udoh, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the cultural significance of Efik traditional narratives, there is limited research on the specific syntactic strategies employed by storytellers. Preliminary observations indicate that unique syntactic constructions contribute to narrative richness yet remain undocumented (Aniekan, 2023). This lack of systematic analysis hampers efforts to preserve these linguistic traditions and understand their evolution in modern contexts. The study seeks to address this gap by providing a comprehensive syntactic analysis of Efik narratives.

Objectives of the study

  • To document the syntactic strategies used in Efik traditional narratives.
  • To analyze the impact of these strategies on narrative clarity and cultural transmission.
  • To propose methods for preserving and revitalizing traditional narrative structures.

Research questions

  • What are the key syntactic strategies in Efik narratives?
  • How do these strategies enhance the storytelling process?
  • What challenges do modern influences pose to these traditional syntactic forms?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers valuable insights into the syntactic dimensions of Efik traditional narratives, contributing to both linguistic theory and cultural preservation. Its findings will benefit folklorists, linguists, and cultural educators, ensuring that traditional narrative art is maintained amid modernization (Ikpe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to investigating syntactic strategies in Efik traditional narratives in Calabar. It does not extend to other narrative elements or genres.

Definitions of terms

  • Syntactic Strategies: Techniques used to organize words and phrases in effective communication.
  • Traditional Narratives: Oral stories that preserve cultural heritage and values.
  • Efik: A language spoken predominantly in Calabar, Nigeria.
