Background of the study
Lagos is a melting pot of diverse Yoruba dialects, each contributing distinct syntactic features to everyday communication. This study assesses the syntactic variation among these dialects, exploring differences in word order, clause structure, and morphological markers. The dynamic urban environment of Lagos, characterized by migration and cultural exchange, has led to the convergence and divergence of traditional syntactic patterns (Afolabi, 2023). Researchers have observed that variations in syntax among Yoruba speakers often reflect regional identities and social stratification (Olusegun, 2024). By examining spoken interactions in markets, educational institutions, and media broadcasts, this study seeks to document these syntactic variations and understand the factors driving change. The analysis also considers the role of language contact with other Nigerian languages and English, which may result in hybrid syntactic constructions (Babatunde, 2025). Through a combination of quantitative analysis and ethnographic observation, the research aims to contribute to a broader understanding of language evolution in an urban multilingual context.

Statement of the problem
Despite the rich diversity of Yoruba dialects in Lagos, systematic research on syntactic variation among these dialects is scarce. Preliminary findings indicate that differences in syntactic constructions may lead to communication challenges and affect language identity (Ayodele, 2023). This study aims to fill the gap by documenting and analyzing the syntactic variability, thus providing insights into language change and contributing to improved educational and linguistic policy.

Objectives of the study

  • To identify syntactic variations among different Yoruba dialects in Lagos.
  • To analyze the social and linguistic factors influencing these variations.
  • To evaluate the implications of syntactic diversity for communication and education.

Research questions

  • What are the main syntactic differences among Yoruba dialects in Lagos?
  • How do social factors contribute to these variations?
  • What impact does syntactic variation have on language standardization?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of syntactic diversity within Yoruba dialects in Lagos. Its findings will enhance understanding of urban language dynamics and support efforts in language planning and education, ultimately contributing to the preservation of linguistic heritage while accommodating urban diversity (Ogun, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to syntactic variation in Yoruba dialects spoken in Lagos. It does not extend to phonological or semantic analysis, nor does it cover dialects from other regions.

Definitions of terms

  • Dialect: A regional or social variation of a language with distinct features.
  • Syntactic Variation: Differences in sentence structure within language usage.
  • Yoruba: A major language of southwestern Nigeria.
