Background of the study
Educational interventions play a crucial role in enhancing linguistic skills among young learners. In Enugu, primary school students learning Igbo often encounter challenges in mastering complex syntactic structures. This study examines the impact of targeted educational interventions—such as curriculum enrichment, teacher training, and interactive language activities—on improving syntactic competence in Igbo (Nwosu, 2023). By integrating modern pedagogical techniques with traditional language instruction, educators aim to reinforce correct sentence construction, promote grammatical awareness, and foster effective communication. Research indicates that structured interventions can lead to measurable improvements in syntactic accuracy and overall language proficiency (Okoro, 2024). The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative assessments of student performance with qualitative observations from classroom interactions. Through pre- and post-intervention testing and teacher interviews, the research seeks to identify best practices and pinpoint areas needing further support. The ultimate goal is to develop an evidence-based model for enhancing syntactic competence that can be replicated in similar educational contexts (Ifeanyi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite efforts to improve Igbo language education, many primary school students in Enugu continue to exhibit syntactic errors and low grammatical proficiency. Preliminary observations indicate that traditional teaching methods may not adequately address the complexities of Igbo syntax (Chukwu, 2023). This gap has implications for both language acquisition and cultural preservation. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of educational interventions in remedying these issues, thereby providing a foundation for curriculum improvements and teacher training programs.

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the current level of syntactic competence in Igbo among primary school students.
  • To assess the impact of targeted educational interventions on syntactic accuracy.
  • To recommend strategies for enhancing Igbo language instruction in primary education.

Research questions

  • What is the baseline level of syntactic competence among Igbo-speaking primary students?
  • How do educational interventions affect syntactic performance?
  • What improvements can be implemented in teaching practices to boost grammatical skills?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses critical gaps in Igbo language education, focusing on syntactic competence. Its findings will inform curriculum development and teacher training, ultimately enhancing language proficiency and contributing to the preservation of Igbo cultural heritage among young learners (Amadi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the effects of educational interventions on syntactic competence in Igbo among primary school students in Enugu. It does not include secondary or tertiary educational settings.

Definitions of terms

  • Educational Interventions: Targeted strategies and programs aimed at improving learning outcomes.
  • Syntactic Competence: The ability to construct and understand grammatically correct sentences.
  • Igbo: A major language spoken in southeastern Nigeria.
