Background of the study
Language contact has long been recognized as a driver of syntactic innovation. In the Tiv language, interactions with neighboring languages and colonial languages have influenced the development of compound sentence structures. This study examines how language contact has contributed to the evolution of compound sentences in Tiv, where speakers integrate multiple clauses to convey complex ideas (Mba, 2023). The analysis focuses on the adaptation of native syntactic rules in response to external linguistic influences, leading to variations in clause linking and sentence complexity. Data gathered from native speakers and recorded conversations reveal that compound sentence formation in Tiv is increasingly characterized by hybrid constructions that blend traditional and borrowed elements (Ortega, 2024). These syntactic developments not only reflect the dynamic nature of language but also underscore the importance of contact-induced change in shaping modern Tiv discourse. The study employs a comparative approach, contrasting historical language data with contemporary usage to uncover patterns of syntactic innovation (Taraba, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although language contact is acknowledged as influencing syntactic change, there is a dearth of research specifically addressing its impact on compound sentence development in Tiv. Preliminary findings indicate that external linguistic influences have led to non-standard compound constructions, complicating language transmission and literacy efforts (Gagar, 2023). This study aims to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the effects of language contact on compound sentence formation in Tiv.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of language contact on Tiv syntax, specifically in compound sentence formation. Its findings will contribute to theoretical models of language change and inform language education and preservation strategies, aiding both linguists and community stakeholders (Yaro, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to investigating the development of compound sentences in Tiv as influenced by language contact. It does not address other syntactic phenomena or language varieties.
