Background of the study
Nigerian Pidgin, as a vibrant and evolving creole language, exhibits unique syntactic characteristics that reflect its dynamic usage in digital communication. Online forums have become a popular venue for speakers to express themselves, leading to the emergence of novel syntactic constructions that blend traditional structures with modern influences (Adebisi, 2023). The informal nature of digital communication encourages creative language use, where features such as reduced inflection, simplified sentence structures, and flexible word order are common. This study appraises the syntactic characteristics of Nigerian Pidgin as used in online forums, examining how these features facilitate rapid and effective communication. Recent research suggests that digital discourse not only influences linguistic innovation but also serves as a laboratory for observing language change in real time (Eze, 2024). By analyzing forum posts, chat logs, and social media interactions, the study seeks to document the syntactic trends and assess their impact on the standardization and evolution of Nigerian Pidgin (Ogunleye, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing importance of digital communication, there is a lack of systematic analysis of the syntactic characteristics of Nigerian Pidgin in online environments. Preliminary evidence indicates that the language's syntax is undergoing rapid transformation, yet the specific changes remain underexplored (Bamidele, 2023). This gap in research hinders our understanding of how digital media influences language structure and evolution. This study aims to fill this void by offering a detailed syntactic appraisal.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the evolving syntax of Nigerian Pidgin in digital spaces. Its findings will benefit linguists, digital communication experts, and language policy makers by highlighting the mechanisms of language change online and informing strategies for language standardization (Falade, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to syntactic analysis of Nigerian Pidgin in online forums. It does not cover offline or spoken variations of the language.
