Background of the study
Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta is marked by a sophisticated use of syntactic framing that strategically shapes political narratives and influences public perception. Political speakers and commentators employ specific syntactic arrangements—such as inversion, ellipsis, and parallel structures—to emphasize ideological stances and reinforce authority (Olukoya, 2023). These framing devices not only serve to articulate policy positions but also to subtly manipulate audience interpretation. In Abeokuta, where traditional rhetoric and modern political communication converge, such syntactic framing is increasingly evident in speeches, debates, and media interviews. Contemporary research has revealed that political discourse often utilizes deliberate syntactic patterns to create persuasive effects and generate a sense of unity or division among constituents (Adebola, 2024). This study examines these syntactic strategies by analyzing recorded political addresses and written commentaries. It aims to determine how specific grammatical structures are deployed to emphasize power dynamics, shape policy debates, and cultivate political identities. The investigation also considers socio-cultural influences, such as indigenous proverbs and historical oratory traditions, that contribute to these syntactic choices (Akinlade, 2025). Through a detailed discourse analysis, the research intends to offer a nuanced understanding of how syntax functions as a tool of persuasion and cultural continuity in contemporary Yoruba political discourse.

Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of syntactic framing in political rhetoric, there is limited empirical research on its specific manifestations in Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta. Preliminary observations suggest that politicians and media personalities adopt distinctive syntactic patterns that have yet to be systematically documented. The gap in the literature makes it challenging to assess how such structures impact audience interpretation and political persuasion (Folarin, 2023). This study addresses the need to analyze these syntactic strategies in order to provide insights that could inform both academic understanding and practical political communication.

Objectives of the study

  • To identify and classify syntactic framing techniques in Yoruba political discourse.
  • To analyze the impact of these syntactic structures on political persuasion and audience interpretation.
  • To explore the influence of cultural and historical factors on the evolution of syntactic framing.

Research questions

  • What are the predominant syntactic framing strategies used in Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta?
  • How do these strategies affect the interpretation of political messages by audiences?
  • In what ways do cultural influences shape these syntactic choices?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the critical role of syntax in political persuasion and cultural expression. Its findings will enhance our understanding of language use in political contexts, inform training for political communicators, and contribute to academic debates on discourse analysis. The research offers valuable insights for linguists, political analysts, and communication experts interested in the interplay between language, power, and identity (Olayinka, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining syntactic framing in Yoruba political discourse in Abeokuta. It does not extend to other forms of political communication or to discourse in other regions.

Definitions of terms

  • Syntactic Framing: The deliberate arrangement of words and phrases to emphasize particular meanings in discourse.
  • Political Discourse: Communication aimed at expressing political ideas and influencing public opinion.
  • Oratory: The art of effective public speaking, particularly in a political context.
