Background of the study
Urban professionals in Igbo communities are increasingly engaging with complex sentence constructions in both spoken and written discourse. This study assesses the usage and evolution of complex syntactic structures among these professionals, providing insights into how formal education and modern communication demands shape language (Nkechi, 2023). Complex sentence constructions, which include multiple subordinate clauses and varied syntactic arrangements, are vital in conveying detailed information and nuanced argumentation. In urban settings, the influence of globalization and technological advancement has spurred shifts in traditional Igbo discourse, leading to an amalgamation of indigenous structures with modern syntactic forms (Chima, 2024). Data collected from interviews, recorded speeches, and written communications indicate that urban professionals are adapting their language to meet professional demands while retaining cultural identity. This study situates its analysis within broader discussions on language modernization and the cognitive implications of complex sentence processing. Recent findings suggest that while complex constructions enhance clarity and detail, they also pose challenges for comprehension and consistency (Obiageli, 2025). By systematically documenting these patterns, the research aims to contribute to theoretical models of syntax and practical guidelines for effective communication in professional settings.

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of complex sentence constructions, there is limited empirical research on their usage among Igbo urban professionals. Current studies often overlook the intricate balance between traditional syntactic forms and modern communicative needs. Preliminary evidence suggests inconsistencies in how complex sentences are structured and understood, leading to potential misinterpretations in professional discourse. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the factors that influence the construction and comprehension of complex sentences. The problem is compounded by rapid social and technological changes that continually reshape language practices, necessitating a focused analysis of contemporary syntactic trends.

Objectives of the study

  • To evaluate the frequency and forms of complex sentence constructions in Igbo discourse among urban professionals.
  • To identify factors that influence the adoption and modification of complex syntactic structures.
  • To propose recommendations for improving clarity and consistency in professional communication.

Research questions

  • What complex sentence structures are most prevalent in Igbo discourse among urban professionals?
  • How do educational and technological influences affect these syntactic constructions?
  • What challenges do professionals face in constructing and interpreting complex sentences?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the evolving nature of Igbo discourse among urban professionals. The findings will benefit educators, communication experts, and language policymakers by offering guidelines to enhance syntactic clarity and effectiveness in professional settings (Chukwuma, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing complex sentence constructions in Igbo discourse among urban professionals. It focuses solely on syntactic aspects and does not consider other linguistic or stylistic features.

Definitions of terms

  • Complex Sentence: A sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
  • Discourse: Written or spoken communication that extends beyond individual sentences.
  • Urban Professional: An individual engaged in a professional occupation within a metropolitan area.
