Background of the study
The Efik language, rich in morphological and syntactic diversity, presents a unique framework for examining relative clause usage among Calabar speakers. Scholars have noted that relative clauses serve as a critical means of embedding additional information within sentences, contributing to the overall complexity and expressiveness of the language (Eze, 2023). Recent studies indicate that shifts in language contact and socio-cultural dynamics in Calabar have prompted changes in syntactic practices, particularly in relative clause constructions (Okoro, 2024). This study aims to analyze how relative clauses are structured and employed in everyday discourse, considering both formal and informal contexts. The investigation further explores the extent to which traditional patterns are maintained or altered by external influences such as education, media, and urbanization. The data, collected through recordings and field interviews, reveals a dynamic interplay between inherited linguistic rules and evolving communicative needs (Nwankwo, 2023). By focusing on the relative clause, this research not only contributes to theoretical syntax but also offers insights into broader cognitive and social factors shaping language use. Moreover, the study situates the Efik language within the larger context of West African linguistic traditions, highlighting similarities and differences with other regional languages (Adebayo, 2024). Such an approach is critical for understanding language preservation and change in a rapidly globalizing world.
Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of relative clauses in syntactic theory, there is limited empirical research on their usage among contemporary Efik speakers in Calabar. Existing literature has often generalized findings from other languages without addressing the particularities of Efik syntax (Ibekwe, 2023). The gap is further widened by rapid socio-cultural changes that may be influencing traditional linguistic patterns. Preliminary observations suggest variability in clause structure across different social groups, indicating potential language shift phenomena. This study, therefore, seeks to systematically document and analyze these variations, aiming to resolve ambiguities regarding the preservation and innovation in relative clause constructions. Such an investigation is crucial for both theoretical linguistics and practical language policy, as it can inform curriculum development and preservation strategies.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides empirical data on a relatively under-researched aspect of Efik syntax. The findings will enrich theoretical models of syntax while offering practical insights for language preservation initiatives. Moreover, it contributes to broader discussions on language change in multilingual contexts, benefiting educators, linguists, and policymakers (Obi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing relative clause usage in the Efik language among Calabar speakers. It does not extend to other dialects or languages, and data collection is confined to selected urban and semi-urban communities in Calabar.
