Background of the Study
Traditional migration has long shaped the lexical diversity of the Tiv language in Benue State. As Tiv communities migrated for trade, agriculture, or settlement, they encountered and exchanged linguistic elements with neighboring groups. These interactions introduced new words, expressions, and even grammatical structures, enriching the Tiv lexicon (Udo, 2023). Over generations, this process has led to significant lexical diversification, reflecting both the adaptability and resilience of the Tiv language. Oral traditions, folk songs, and local narratives document numerous instances of lexical borrowing and innovation resulting from migration. This dynamic process is a testament to the Tiv people's ability to integrate external influences while preserving core linguistic identity. By examining historical migration patterns and their linguistic outcomes, researchers can trace how movement has contributed to lexical change and regional variation within Tiv (Adegoke, 2024; Ogbuehi, 2025). This study investigates the relationship between traditional migration and lexical diversity in Tiv, shedding light on the mechanisms of language change in a migratory context.

Statement of the Problem
Despite observable lexical diversity in Tiv, there is limited research linking traditional migration to specific lexical innovations. This gap hampers our understanding of how migratory movements influence language evolution and complicates efforts to standardize Tiv for educational purposes (Udo, 2023). The challenge lies in documenting and analyzing the lexical impact of migration, which remains fragmented in current literature (Adegoke, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To document lexical variations in Tiv attributable to migration.

  • To analyze the influence of migratory patterns on vocabulary diversity.

  • To recommend strategies for integrating lexical diversity in language planning.

Research Questions:

  • How has traditional migration influenced Tiv vocabulary?

  • What lexical innovations are directly linked to migration?

  • What measures can support the preservation of lexical diversity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it clarifies the role of traditional migration in shaping Tiv lexical diversity, offering insights for language planning and cultural preservation in Benue State (Udo, 2023; Ogbuehi, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to lexical analysis in Tiv communities in Benue State; excludes contemporary migration effects.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Migration: Historical movement of populations for livelihood.

  • Lexical Diversity: Variety in vocabulary usage.

  • Tiv Language: The language of the Tiv people.
