Background of the Study
Language death, the process by which a language loses its speakers, poses a significant threat to Nigerian indigenous languages. Historical data reveal that many indigenous languages have experienced decline due to factors such as colonization, globalization, and cultural assimilation. However, recent revival efforts, including community initiatives, educational programs, and digital archiving, have sought to reverse this trend (Ifeoma, 2023). These initiatives draw upon historical records, oral traditions, and archival materials to reconstruct linguistic forms and revive cultural identity. By analyzing historical data, researchers can identify patterns of language decline and successful revival strategies. This study examines case studies of language death and subsequent revival efforts across Nigeria, providing a comprehensive overview of how historical documentation informs contemporary language preservation and revitalization (Chinwe, 2024; Balogun, 2025). The goal is to understand the conditions under which language death occurs and to recommend best practices for effective revival.

Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous revival initiatives, many Nigerian indigenous languages continue to face the threat of extinction due to insufficient preservation strategies and a lack of comprehensive historical analysis (Ifeoma, 2023). The gap between historical data and modern revitalization efforts hinders the development of effective programs. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating historical language death and revival cases, thus informing sustainable strategies for language preservation (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To analyze historical data on language death in Nigerian indigenous languages.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of revival initiatives.

  • To propose best practices for sustainable language revitalization.

Research Questions:

  • What historical factors have contributed to language death in Nigeria?

  • How have revival efforts succeeded or failed?

  • What strategies can ensure long-term language preservation?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it bridges historical research with contemporary language revival efforts, offering critical insights for preserving Nigeria’s linguistic diversity (Ifeoma, 2023; Balogun, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to historical data and revival efforts in select Nigerian indigenous languages; excludes languages with extensive modern documentation.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Language Death: The loss of language speakers over time.

  • Revival: Efforts to restore endangered languages.

  • Indigenous Languages: Native languages of Nigeria.
