Background of the Study
Colonial languages, particularly English and Arabic, have significantly influenced the evolution of Hausa in Kano. During the colonial era, the introduction of English for administration and education, along with religious influences from Arabic, instigated notable changes in Hausa vocabulary, syntax, and phonology. These influences continue to be evident in contemporary Hausa, as seen in the adoption of loanwords, changes in syntactic structures, and hybrid forms that blend traditional elements with colonial legacies (Aminu, 2023). Kano, a historic center of commerce and culture, served as a meeting point for diverse linguistic communities, further intensifying language contact. Over time, the evolution of Hausa in Kano reflects not only external linguistic imprints but also internal adaptation to modern communication needs. The interplay between indigenous language practices and imposed colonial structures has created a dynamic linguistic landscape that shapes identity, education, and media discourse today (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how colonial languages have influenced Hausa linguistic evolution by analyzing historical texts, educational curricula, and oral narratives.
Statement of the Problem
Although colonial influence on Hausa is well recognized, its specific effects on the linguistic evolution in Kano are underexplored. Current research rarely details the mechanisms through which English and Arabic have reshaped Hausa phonology and syntax (Aminu, 2023). This gap hinders the development of effective language preservation strategies and educational curricula that respect Hausa’s rich heritage. Policymakers face challenges in addressing the tension between modern usage and traditional forms. Therefore, this study aims to systematically examine the colonial impact on Hausa language evolution in Kano, clarifying its implications for language identity and informing policy decisions (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To document colonial linguistic influences on Hausa in Kano.
To analyze changes in vocabulary, syntax, and phonology.
To propose recommendations for culturally sensitive language policy.
Research Questions:
How have English and Arabic influenced Hausa linguistic evolution in Kano?
What specific changes are observable in Hausa structure?
What measures can support the preservation of traditional Hausa forms?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a detailed examination of colonial influences on Hausa in Kano, thereby aiding in the development of language policies that balance modernity with tradition. The findings will contribute to academic research and inform culturally sensitive educational reforms (Aminu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Hausa linguistic evolution in Kano; excludes other regions and languages.
Definitions of Terms:
Colonial Languages: Languages introduced during colonial rule, notably English and Arabic.
