Background of the Study
Bilingual vocabulary acquisition is a critical component of early childhood education, laying the foundation for lifelong language proficiency. In Nigeria, educators implement various strategies—such as interactive storytelling, visual aids, and digital media—to promote vocabulary growth in both indigenous languages and English (Oladele, 2023). These approaches aim to foster active learning, enhance word recognition, and improve comprehension skills. Effective vocabulary instruction not only supports linguistic competence but also boosts cognitive development and academic performance. However, challenges persist due to disparities in resource allocation, teacher training, and cultural relevance of instructional materials. This study evaluates the effectiveness of current vocabulary acquisition strategies in Nigerian early childhood education, examining their impact on bilingual vocabulary growth and overall language development. By comparing different instructional methods, the research seeks to identify best practices that can be standardized and scaled up to benefit a wider population of young learners (Adegoke, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of diverse vocabulary acquisition strategies, many Nigerian children face challenges in developing balanced bilingual proficiency. Inadequate resources, inconsistent teaching methods, and insufficient teacher training contribute to gaps in vocabulary acquisition (Oladele, 2023). These issues result in lower academic performance and hinder long-term language development. The absence of systematic evaluations of these strategies further complicates efforts to optimize instructional practices. This study aims to address these challenges by assessing the effectiveness of current vocabulary interventions and proposing evidence-based improvements to enhance bilingual language outcomes (Adegoke, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess current vocabulary acquisition strategies in early childhood settings.
To evaluate their impact on bilingual vocabulary development.
To recommend improvements for effective vocabulary instruction.
Research Questions:
What strategies are currently used to acquire vocabulary in bilingual settings?
How do these strategies affect vocabulary growth?
What enhancements can be made to improve vocabulary acquisition?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines bilingual vocabulary acquisition strategies in Nigerian early childhood education. Its findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers to refine teaching practices, promote balanced vocabulary development, and enhance overall academic performance (Oladele, 2023; Adegoke, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to vocabulary acquisition in early childhood classrooms and does not address other language domains.
Definitions of Terms:
Bilingual Vocabulary Acquisition: The process of learning words in two languages.
Early Childhood Education: Formal educational programs for young children aged 3–6 years.
Instructional Strategies: Methods employed to facilitate learning.
