Background of the Study
Bilingual language identity formation involves the integration of two linguistic and cultural identities within an individual. Among Nigerian adolescents, the formation of a bilingual identity is influenced by family, education, and social interactions. These adolescents navigate a complex landscape where indigenous languages and global languages, such as English, coexist. Language identity is not only about linguistic competence but also involves the adoption of cultural values, attitudes, and behaviors associated with each language (Chinwe, 2023). Educational institutions and media play a significant role in shaping these identities, providing contexts where adolescents negotiate their sense of self and cultural belonging. The process is dynamic and may result in a harmonious bilingual identity or a conflict between competing cultural influences. This study appraises how Nigerian adolescents form their bilingual language identity by examining the factors that contribute to or hinder the integration of diverse linguistic elements. It will explore how identity formation impacts academic engagement, social relationships, and future career aspirations (Ifeoma, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Nigerian adolescents often experience challenges in forming a cohesive bilingual identity due to conflicting cultural and linguistic influences. Disparities between home language practices and formal education can lead to identity confusion and reduced self-esteem (Chinwe, 2023). These challenges affect academic performance and social integration, as students struggle to balance indigenous and global cultural expectations. The lack of targeted support for bilingual identity formation further exacerbates these issues, leaving many adolescents with fragmented linguistic and cultural identities (Ifeoma, 2024). This study seeks to address these concerns by investigating the processes and factors that influence bilingual identity formation among Nigerian adolescents, thereby informing strategies to support holistic development.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To examine the factors influencing bilingual identity formation.

  • To assess the impact of identity formation on academic and social outcomes.

  • To recommend support strategies for cohesive bilingual identity development.

Research Questions:

  • How do Nigerian adolescents develop a bilingual identity?

  • What challenges hinder effective identity integration?

  • What interventions can promote a balanced bilingual identity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the intricacies of bilingual language identity formation among Nigerian adolescents. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers in creating supportive environments that foster integrated linguistic and cultural identities, ultimately enhancing academic performance and social well-being (Chinwe, 2023; Ifeoma, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to Nigerian adolescents and focuses on identity formation within formal educational settings.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Bilingual Language Identity: The integration of two linguistic and cultural identities.

  • Adolescents: Young individuals in their teenage years.

  • Identity Formation: The process by which individuals develop a sense of self and cultural belonging.
