Background of the Study
Cross-cultural communication within bilingual families in Abuja is an essential element of maintaining social cohesion and cultural identity. Nigerian families in urban centers like Abuja often navigate the complexities of integrating indigenous languages with English, reflecting the country’s rich cultural diversity. Effective cross-cultural communication involves understanding not only linguistic nuances but also cultural practices, values, and social norms (Okoro, 2023). In these settings, family interactions, storytelling, and daily conversations serve as conduits for transmitting cultural knowledge and language skills across generations. Bilingual family environments facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences that enrich individual perspectives and promote social integration. However, differences in language proficiency and cultural expectations can lead to communication breakdowns and misunderstandings, affecting familial relationships and cultural continuity (Adebayo, 2024). This study assesses the dynamics of cross-cultural communication in bilingual Nigerian families in Abuja, examining how these interactions contribute to language maintenance, cultural preservation, and the development of interpersonal skills (Uche, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of cross-cultural communication, many bilingual Nigerian families in Abuja experience challenges in maintaining effective dialogue. Variations in language proficiency, generational gaps, and shifting cultural values often lead to misunderstandings and diminished cultural transmission (Okoro, 2023). These issues not only affect family cohesion but also compromise the effective maintenance of bilingual competence. The absence of structured support for enhancing cross-cultural dialogue in domestic settings exacerbates these challenges (Adebayo, 2024). This study seeks to explore the factors that impede effective communication in bilingual households and to develop strategies for improving cross-cultural interactions to support language and cultural continuity (Uche, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate cross-cultural communication practices in bilingual Nigerian families.

  • To identify barriers to effective communication within these households.

  • To propose interventions that enhance cross-cultural dialogue and language maintenance.

Research Questions:

  • How do bilingual families in Abuja manage cross-cultural communication?

  • What are the primary barriers to effective communication in these settings?

  • What strategies can improve cross-cultural interactions at home?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into cross-cultural communication within bilingual Nigerian families, highlighting its role in language and cultural preservation. The findings will guide family-based and community interventions aimed at strengthening communication practices, thereby supporting cohesive bilingual development (Okoro, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining cross-cultural communication in bilingual Nigerian families in Abuja and does not include other urban or rural areas.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Cross-Cultural Communication: The process of exchanging information between individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

  • Bilingual Families: Households where two languages are used regularly.

  • Cultural Continuity: The preservation and transmission of cultural values and practices across generations.
